The Big Easy utilizes Char-Broil’s TRU Infrared technology eliminates hot and cold spots, and delivers juicy, crisp, and flavorful results every time. The TRU Infrared technology takes the mess and hassle out of cooking a perfect turkey (up to 16 lbs.) or other large cut of meat (chickens, pork tenderloins, or beef roasts), leveraging infrared heat to cook the food, instead of heated oil like other products. Because of the oil-less functionality, there is no waiting for the oil to heat up and you can prepare your bird or meat with seasoned rubs or injectable marinades- both of which are not an option with traditional fryers. The fully-enclosed 16,000 BTU propane burners sit inside of a double-wall cylindrical cooking chamber, which generate infrared heat that circles the cooker to penetrate and cook the meat evenly, sealing in juices. My husband is terrible at assembling, so give yourself an hour to assemble just in case. Don't wait to put it together right before you cook!
We made a duck for Thanksgiving and that turned out delicious. We won't be buying roast duck from the store anymore. Making it at home with this fryer.
No oil, just needs your BBQ propane tank. Food turns out delicious and cooks in a short time. Our 13-lb turkey cooked in less than 2 hours!
The Good: it came out great. No burnt parts. It cooked evenly around the meat. Easy to assemble and start. It is bigger than I thought it would be. Has a heavy and sturdy construction. The meat came out juicy and tender. A plus for me all around. Now I do not have to buy peanut oil for the holidays. So the product pays for itself.
The Bad: For me 10 mins a pound did not work. It could be because of the type of meat. It sucked because I was banking on a 50 min cook time and it took 2 hrs. Oh well the family just had to eat an hour later.
Bottom line: If you are using a traditional fryer then this item should definitely peak your interest. I looked at a couple of oil-less fryers and by far this one was the best because of all the good reviews. Do not hesitate to purchase this before the holidays so you can practice your "technic". To me there was not much to it. Next week I'll be making a chicken to see if the cook time changes. More to come on the construction longevity. I'm sure mine will hold up great because I take the time to clean and put up my toys after every use. I have a 7 year old char broil BBQ Smoker Grill and people still think it's new.
Then Amazon had this Char-Broil oil less fryer on flash sale. For the cost of the 2 3 gallon drums of oil I'd need, I could purchase this bad boy and give it a shot. The box arrived and it was well packaged. After a fairly straightforward assembly I was ready to roll. Char-Broil recommends pre-seasoning the inner barrel with vegetable oil, which I did without incident. Then came the big day, two 14 lb birds that would make or break thanksgiving. I made sure to adjust my cooking and prep time for the longer suggested 10 min/lb, but this wasn't a big deal since I didnt have to wait for oil to heat up. You fire this cooker up with one crank of the igniter, and once you see the flame ring on the bottom is lit, drop in your bird. It was also nice to be able to safely use this setup on my deck since its more akin to a gas grill than a giant open vat of flammable oil. I attached a digital probe thermometer to my turkeys and was able to monitor them each throughout the entire cooking process. It was actually very liberating to be able to perform so many other meal prep tasks and not babysit the fryer. As far as the turkeys go, this method allows for seasoning the outside of the turkey since there is no oil to wash away the seasoning. I applied a nice garlic and herb wet rub and it made a huge difference. Each turkey came out hot, moist, with perfectly golden brown crispy skin. It honestly `had that fried turkey texture. And clean up? Simply empty the drip tray and let the unit cook for 10 more min at max heat setting to cook off any grease/ debris like a self cleaning oven. The turkeys were a resounding success and I got to enjoy my holiday for a change.
I'd highly recommend this oil less fryer to anyone. I have since used it for drumsticks and kebabs and its performed beautifully each time. Don't get me wrong though, this unit is a beast and it's anything but space saving. But if you have the room , then get one.... like now. You won't regret it.
