Top Customer Reviews
For years, I've had to hound my husband to keep adding coals to the fire to keep the temperature up when smoking. It was usually all he could do to keep it at 200º. Every time I walked by this smoker, it was maintaining 250º to 260º. The installation to our Char-griller Duo was very easy. I was initially concerned over the lack of a gasket between the grill and the fire box, but I can tell you that not one bit of smoke escaped at the seams. Even the lids have excellent seals. I was exceptionally impressed with the performance.
I'm uploading some pictures. I highly recommend this addition to the Char-griller Duo!
Well, it appears they removed the customer images I uploaded. Maybe they'll let me post links...
Firebox leaks smoke at every seam, but we mostly fixed that with some metal HVAC tape, $10.
The black paint turns to carbon and flakes away at about 500-degrees. Buy a $8 can of high-temp spray paint for the day your water pan boils dry and the temperature spikes, destroying the paint. *See photo.
Area in the firebox is much smaller than in the bottom of the grill. A snake of charcoal briquettes in the firebox will burn for 2-3 hours, whereas the grill will hold a snake twice that long. There's also less area to hold a water reservoir.
On the up side, using the firebox allows you to smoke meat on most of the grill's large main rack, rather than just the small top rack--about 3x the area you'd have if building your fire in the grill.
Another upside, the firebox is much easier to clean coals from than the main grill.
As a side firebox for smoking, this works amazingly. I've used it to smoke a bunch of different things, and had tons of success. I generally am able to set up coals and smoking chips on the right side, then a pan of water to the left of that to regulate heat a bit. It's also easy to clean out, since the coal tray slides right out the side.
My only complaint is the paint - it peels off as soon as you have a hot fire in this thing. If you were actually using this for grilling and not just smoking, I'd imagine all the paint would be gone really fast. I happened to have some coals get too hot once when I was smoking, and the paint all peeled off right afterward, and then the moisture in the air (I live in a humid environment) caused a ton of rust all over the top. So be prepared to re-seal it, and be careful for moisture.
Still, it's really great when paired with the grill, and all my guests have loved whatever I've smoked using it.
