Writing a useful self-help book takes much effort. It is, in my opinion, sharing a part of one's life. Plagiarism camouflaged behind the research is often a get rich quick scheme in many self-help books nowadays. This book is unlike those books.
"The Charge" is rich with nuggets and real-life, actionable insights that one can implement right away, expressed while telling an engaging story. "The Charge" may make you uncomfortable and unhappy sometimes, as it asks the readers some hard questions. It lets you go to a mental space where you can make some decisions for your growth. "The Charge" is awesome in so many ways. It teaches you how to lead yourself out of self-pity, your imposter syndromes. This book is even so relevant during the new challenges the world faces right now.
Here is just one example of notes which I took during reading:
Want to improve competence?
Ask -> Why? Find an intrinsic connection behind your new competency
How? 1>Collaborate with a great peer group
2> Contribute to something you find personally meaningful
5/5 from my side.
I've been aware of Brendon for a long time - have really enjoyed his videos and truly brilliant take on success and success strategies. So of course was anxious to give this a read. In a nutshell, he writes about each of the five baseline drives and the five "forward" drives (those that raise us to a whole other level). Basically, the levels are those associated with self development. If you're just getting started in personal development, then this is probably the book for you. However, having been in that space for many years, I found myself getting kind of bored - I just wanted more juice. While this book is the culmination of his self-development efforts and ah-has, I think he is far more skilled in the marketing arena.
As I said at the beginning of this review - a good book, but just not one for me.
"The Charge" seemed more appropriate, but after reading only 285 pages at the cost of $14.33, I'm feeling a bit let down.
I was inspired to write in my journal and do the exercises, but again, I'm feeling kind of "eh," because the book was so short.
It was inspiring, but I'm wanting more :( Perhaps more exercises, perhaps more words of wisdom, perhaps if the cost was $4.33 I'd feel satisfied....
