With respect to 'sonics', the JBL is impressive for having such a small profile. We have the Bose Mini SoundLink in the office: I A/B'ed the two and found the JBL to have a sound that 'consumer ears' will enjoy above the Bose. Bose focuses on accentuating a more balanced sound, emphasizing highs and mids, rather than pushing low end. Again, what do you want/need? What kind of music are you listening to? Neither is 'better'.
The Charge 2+ having an extra-large battery in order to act as a mobile cell phone charging solution was a major factor in my decision. Also the fact that it acts as a bluetooth speaker/microphone for cell phone calls.
The best sound you're going to find in this price bracket is the Ultimate Ears. UEs also act as a speaker phone accessory and are waterproof; the JBL Charge 2+ is only SPLASHproof, while you could float the UEs around at a pool party. However, I don't feel the UEs are worth the $189ish price point, not when I can get so much from this JBL at $130.
What was most important to me was:
• Respectable sound quality (enough to listen critically and give composers notes)
• True travel-size mobility
• A speakerphone accessory for conference calls
• A big battery that holds a large charge, enough so to charge a dying cell phone if necesssary
I listened extensively to all of them and settled on the Charge 2+ for its superior sound quality. Although the Charge is not waterproof like the Boom 2, the sound could not compare. I have been a musician for 10 years, so I suppose I am what people call an "audiophile." At first, I noticed that the Charge sounded like the volume was fluctuating at high volumes. After doing some research, I found that this is just the audio stabilizer kicking in so you don't blow the speaker out. After lowering the bass just a tad on my Spotify equalizer, I didn't have the problem anymore.
But seriously, did I mention how AMAZING it sounds?? I have a large stereo speaker in my living room and this comes close to matching the large stereo system (minus the bass).
I will admit, I'm a little weary of the quality of the water resistance, but I think it will be fine around the pool or in the shower. This is the only downfall of the Charge. I really liked the style and features of the Boom 2, but again, the sound quality was just muddy and lacking. I also like how the Charge has the option of charging your phone or e-cig in my case :) It also has the option to skip tracks, which the Boom did not have.
Trust me, this speaker is worth the money. It is definitely the best in it's class for $150. If you're debating on this or the UE Boom 2, go with this, or better yet, go try them out yourself at your local store.
Frigging love this thing and I use it every day. You WON'T regret your purchase!
Also, I bought one of these for my sister (who was asking for a bluetooth speaker for christmas). I have now received two thank you notes: one from my sister, one from her husband. This fits in a bike bottle cage, by the way.
This has amazing sound for the price, but the bass is a little strong, when using with an iPad.
