Why do I have to provide ChargePoint with my credit card to manage this device?

I would give it more stars if it weren't for the company policy requiring my credit card to be on file to manage this device.

Here's part of the response I received from ChargePoint's support "Eric A" . "You must have a payment method set up in order to create a station, this is a requirement of setting up an account."

So I have no choice but to have degraded use of a device I purchased *OR* I get to expose a credit card number to a company that doesn't provide services that I want. Thanks ChargePoint, the one star rating stands until I can use my device hassle-free.

"We are always looking for ways to improve our end user experience and we appreciate you taking the time to contact us."

If that were true, ChargePoint, you would have offered me a method to create an account without signing up for your public chargers SO I CAN USE THE DEVICE I PAID FOR.

In order to manage the device you have to download the app to your phone. ( no big deal)
In order to use the app, you have to create an account with ChargePoint. (Again, no big deal)
In order to create an account with ChargePoint, you have to give up your credit card information so they can charge you $10.
Conclusion = Chargepoint want me to pay for the privilege of using the device I just paid for = 1 star rating.

Hey ChargePoint: If you had public chargers close enough to be worth signing up to use, I would still want to manage my device without signing up for your network.

You need a CC to use the app. Do not buy!

Imagine my disappointment when after my electrician finished hooking up the ChargePoint station in my garage, I went to use the mobile app and found out that ChargePoint requires a CC to register an account with them. This is outrageous. Nowhere in Amazon's product description does it mention the CC requirement to use the mobile app. This is deceptive advertising on the part of Amazon and ChargePoint. If I could give it zero stars I would. I'm waiting for ChargePoint's reply and will post an update.

Both good and bad aspects

I really wanted to like this. Compared to other products, it looks more like it belongs in a home instead of in a commercial setting. I installed it in a conspicuous spot in my little garage so it was important to me to have something small that looked good. Unfortunately, I had some problems. On the positive side, they got most things right. Most of the packaging was excellent and it protected the nice plastic case and covers. The Installation Guide is essentially perfect. There are a few tasks you need to do to fasten the hardware to the wall and attach the charging cable. Instructions are super clear and easy. They also show how to connect to your local WiFi and that was simple and worked right away. When I opened the cord box, I found the cable clip was broken into two pieces. This cheap little piece of plastic is like a clip that holds a bread bag closed. But it's important here because it holds the weight of the heavy charging cable. It's possible to fashion your own workaround that's even better, but it's really a defect in the design for such an important part. The second problem was their response to the problem. When I called the support number, they told me it was impossible for them to send me a replacement clip, despite it costing almost nothing to make. I was told to send back the entire cable to Amazon and they would replace everything. I sent emails to ChargePoint asking the same thing and did not get a response. I'm concerned and wondering if I find another problem after the 1st month, that Amazon will not accept a return and ChargePoint will not consider a warranty claim. I'm just not sure.

Update - After I posted this review, ChargePoint sent me a replacement clip, despite telling me that was impossible. I appreciated that, but had already returned the entire cable to Amazon for replacement as instructed. Amazon gets 5 stars and ChargePoint gets 4 stars. The charger is working great so far, but their customer service could be better.

Very informative EVSE - but no support for NEMA 14-50 outlets

Installation was very simple and the unit looks great. Time will tell about reliability. This is our primary EVSE now, replacing the indestructible ClipperCreek HCS-40 we've been using for the last 2 years. We wanted real-time charging status, charging rate, and cost information. This does that all well.

If I had any concerns, it was that they do not sell a power cord for NEMA 14-50 outlets which is quite odd. I had to downgrade my outlet to the NEMA 6-50 that they do have a power cord for. ClipperCreek and Tesla both support (and even recommend - for future proofing) 14-50 outlets. It would be very inexpensive for them to offer it as an option.

Failed after 2 months of use... still waiting for a replacement.

I did not expect to be giving this anything but a glowing review, but the reality of ownership isn’t quite a rosy as I had hoped. About a month ago, our Pacifica Hybrid began to refuse to charge from this charger. At first we thought it was the car, but then we plugged in a Nissan Leaf... same problem. Car refuses to charge (error indicated on the blue dash lights). The CP charger on the other hand is not reporting any faults... this was really disappointing. It seems this is nothing more than a wifi enabled outlet, it has no diagnostic capability. CP Customer service was friendly, but not able to make heads or tails of the problem (even after logging into the charger directly). It’s been over a week now and the replacement has yet to ship... the Pacifica is fine, but the Leaf is useless.

I’m really disappointed in the product and the lack of urgency displayed by CP. I would not recommend this product or the company making it. They still have some growing up to do, both in engineering, and in understanding their customers needs.

Despite Amazon delivery delays (to their credit they did refund what I paid for the "guaranteed Friday delivery", but I had to cancel my electrician and charge at 120V for the first weekend with my new car), I am very happy with my ChargePoint charger. It's fast, and the cord does indeed stay flexible at -30 as noted by the previous reviewer. The Wi-Fi connection and app give a detailed record of any charging done with the unit and, as I understand it, any other ChargePoint public-access charger (though I haven't tried one yet). The app allows me to easily calculate my per kilometre cost (~ 2.9 cents vs. 10.3 cents for our Passat, calculated at $1.05/litre).

The charger downloads Hydro One time-of-day rates and uses them to calculate your cost per charge. It can be programmed to only charge at the lowest (ie., overnight and weekend) rates, which would be handy if your EV doesn't support such timing itself.

As pointed out below, the length of charge time is connected time after charging starts, but the app does include a graph for each charge showing the charging time, the kilowatts used throughout the charge and the total kWh added.

My only regret is not buying the 25 foot cord, but it was out of stock when I ordered the charger and the new car delivery was only days away.

Slick EV charger with Wifi connectivity

The ChargePoint Home is a slick charging station that is much smaller than other charging stations that I have seen. I ordered the one with the 25ft cord (which itself is extremely solid). The charging station and the cord are shipped in separate boxes and unfortunately Amazon only shipped me the charging station without the cord however they promptly fixed the error. The charger has an LED that changes color and also fades in/out depending on the state of charging, It is nice but not really necessary as it draws attention to the charger at night if you install it outside in front of your home. I installed it on the side of my home so it is less visible. It takes seconds to have the charger join your WiFi network (connection information is done via Bluetooth). The app shows you the charging status and supposedly calculates how much each charge costs you however I only charged my car once and it hasn't given me that feedback yet. The reason why I am giving it 4 stars instead of 5 is because the charger is made almost entirely of plastic. It says it is an outdoor charger but I recommend being extremely careful when wrapping the cord around during cold weather. The cover plate that surrounds the charge cord feels a bit thin. My parents have a Schneider Electric EV230WSR which is a giant, solid metal box and just feels so much more solid than the ChargePoint (although the EV230WSR is discontinued now). Anyway, for the price I was expecting the ChargePoint to just be a little more solid.

Great hardware, app needs improvements

Charging station is working great without single issue.
Installation and connecting to internet was very easy.
Do not use GFCI breaker with it though. It will trip.
App is also working good with it and is reliable but it is missing few obvious options that would make it even better. There is no way in app to manually turn off charging, app only uses miles for distances and there are few more things that could be added as well.

Great Vehicle Charger

Works really well. I especially like the Android app from ChargePoint that tracks charging cost based on upon local hydro rates. I'm really happy to have installed a 240V charger, as it is now taking less than half as long to achieve a full charge on my EV battery as it did with the 110V charger that came with the vehicle.

One issue which I hope will be resolved soon, is that Amazon Alexa only works with this ChargePoint unit in the US. For some reason, despite ChargePoint selling the units to Canada, the Amazon Alexa skill that is required is geo-blocked for use in Canada. Also, the ChargePoint Android app requires registering a payment method so that you can use your mobile phone to pay at public ChargePoint stations. Ironically, there don't seem to be any public ChargePoint EVSEs in my area -- still, it might be handy when travelling. Also, you cannot lock your home charger. I was hoping there would be an "off" switch or a feature/setting through the Android app that would allow for prevention of unauthorised charging from my home unit. Sadly, this doesn't seem possible, which means that if your unit is installed in an accessible location on your property, someone with an EV could help themselves to your electricity -- seems like a design flaw to me. Wi-Fi setup through the ChargePoint app was very quick and easy. It seems to be a quality unit and I like that the cord easily wraps around the unit with a centre dock for the charging handle -- great design.
