I was very skeptical at first but thought I give it a try, it's only a few bucks.

It works as advertised, at least as far as I can tell using an Apple iPad. Connecting it to my PC's USB port (without this adapter) will only charge when the screen is off and very slow. Using this adapter it will charge while the screen is on and in general charge much faster.

How does it work? The USB specs say a device can only draw 0.5 Ampere. To comply with this standard, the iPad will also only draw 0.5 Ampere which is too low to charge when the screen is on. When it's turned off, it will charge the battery, but very slow.

Now each computer has several USB connectors and not all devices need the full power. USB keyboards, mice, or connections to printers all don't need much or any power. This little adapter simply tells the iPad that it's OK to draw power power from the USB port. The adapter doesn't provide extra power (that would be physically impossible), it just tells the iPad it's OK to draw more. As long as you are not maxing out all your USB ports in terms of power (which is very unlikely) this method works just fine.

Where this adapter fails is on devices that really only provide 0.5 Ampere output. I'd be careful with netbooks or cheap car USB adapters. Also some backup batteries that provide a USB port to charge phones and such might be limited to 0.5 Ampere and using this adapter will not magically overcome their limitation.

But for any normal computer this little adapter will do the trick and work fine.

This product does not work. I tried it in various different USB outlets....not one of them worked, I tried both USB 2.0 and. 3.0. It charged through neither and now I am stuck with a tiny little piece of crap that I paid money for, but not enough to make it worth returning.

Don't fall for it

I have an ipad 3 ....this product does not work even a little bit for me, it might for others, but no luck whatsoever for me.

Great device:

PROS:
1. Small. Great for traveling.
2. Works well. Fully charges both my iPhone and iPad in about an hour or two.
3. Works even when used with a "USB 2.0 A-Male to A-Female Extension Cable".

CONS:
1. You cannot sync an iPad or iPhone with iTunes when charging with this device.
2. The cap can be easily misplaced.

With the promise of 1 out of 2 working in the initial order I ordered 4 more.

One working is apparently aberrant. Even then it only works with certain combinations of known good cables or charging sources (battery usb, ac usb, pc usb)

I shall be returning as many as possible. I'm stuck with the initial two but I have since lost the confidence lent by that first order. Maybe an engineer will happen by to disassemble- and diagnose the point of failure.

Fortunately this is amazon and NOT a flea market.

It was continually frustrating to plug my IPad into my computer and not have it charge. Now that I have this adapter I can charge it with my laptop and continue to do things on the IPad while it is plugged in and not compromise the battering charging. The only complaint I have is that the cover fits so snugly that it is very difficult to take off.

cheap and simple and it works. my ipad (first gen) and ipod touch (fourth gen) would not charge with some of my laptops. this little gadget did the trick. i also tried it with a lithium ion external battery which with this device now charges both ipad and ipod. would highly recommend this product.

Works as described. Tested with iPad Air connected through USB 2.0 port on Dell laptop. Eliminated the "This cable or accessory is not certified and may not work reliably with this iPad" error message which I was previously receiving with the same connection.

It does work! The only caveat is this: whenever I plug it in to my Lenovo X-Series ThinkPad, with or without the iPad attached, it causes a USB port overload. But once the adapter with iPad attached is plugged in, I click "Reset" on the overload warning and all is well (as far as I can tell) and the iPad charges. Note that if I plug in the adapter only, the overload trips; and if I then reset and plug the iPad into the plugged-in adapter, it trips the overload a second time. If you start up the machine with everything already plugged in, there is no overload.

Because of this (minor?) issue I give it 4 stars instead of 5. The grandson loves the wristband.
