This book is our first jump into the Charlie book series but I am so pleased! This is an adorable story where Charlie's life is made interestingly complicated by a new Christmas arrival, a cat! My animal loving 4yr old has a blast with the pictures and the illustrations are so detailed we don't have to read the words to understand what is going on. Sometimes our own depictions are more entertaining and fun! I look forward to more Charlie book adventures in our future.

I love a book that can take a reader to an experience they might never really get to have. Working in lower socio-economic schools for many years, I saw the joy in children's faces when I shared a book with them that took them to an adventure. And, here we go again, out to the ranch with Charlie & a new friend or two. Without Diane de Groat's colorful & detailed illustrations, this book would not be nearly as fun. Just to see snow for some children will be exciting! But to see the details of ranch life (boots, lasso ropes, & cowboy hats, etc.)makes it seem like we are in the story as well. No one in the story seems to notice the little chipmunk that hides on most pages but the reader surely will have fun looking for it. The recipe at the back of the book seems to be an add on but then the author Ree Drummond is a cookbook author & food network star. Get your holiday shopping done early with this title.

This book is quite painful to read - like the story doesn't have any flow and is just....boring? It really seems like notes from the first book brainstorm session. One sentence reads, "Well, the last thing I'm going to do is let this whole kitty thing disrupt my peace. I have a lot of work to do around here!"

Then the font choices.... why are some things capitalized but of the standard font type, then others are larger, red but lowercase and don't align with emphasis? I truly can't read it to my kids without sighing.

What an opportunity missed to show aspects of a working ranch life - especially at Christmas! - through a charming dog! Or at least have a story?

A few years ago I purchased "Charlie, the Ranch Dog" for my daughter, who was 20 at that time. Her dog resembled Charlie so much I just had to get it for her. Since then I have purchased every new "Charlie" book I could find and have put them away for my grandchildren when and if I have them. If that's not in the cards, I'll donate the books. Either way, any child that is introduced to him, will find a sweet, gentle and very funny dog that they will fall in love with! I'm so glad I stumbled upon "Charlie", even at my age, you just have to smile as you read and look at the absolutely beautiful illustrations found on page after page! Take a chance on "Charlie. Your children will love you for it.

This book will make a great addition to our collection of Christmas books that we love to read on Christmas Eve (it's our tradition).
