By Shalom Freedman HALL OF FAME on July 26, 2008
Format: DVD
Daniel Patrick Moynihan was one of the great figures in American politics and political thought of the last half of the twentieth- century. On this program he is a bit of a lion in winter, without the wit and quickness of his more formidable days. Still his intelligence and insights are well beyond the ordinary. He comes to talk about his eighteenth and latest book, 'Secrecy'. He talks about the bureaucratic uses of secrecy, the power that secrecy gives, the times when secrecy is a mistake. He also speaks about the recent Congressional elections and the Clinton impeachment question. He is firmly on the side of what in fact happened, the not moving forward with impeachment allowing President Clinton to finish his term. He also speaks about the urgency of dealing with the Social Security question.
Moynihan was always a great entertainer as well as a great intellect. Here he is a bit slower than he was in his prime but still a great positive presence, and filled with interesting ideas and comments.
