Editorial Reviews

John Wisdom wants to make good, but he'll never get the chance. Convicted of felony car theft, the earnest 23-year-old finds closed doors of opportunity. So he turns bank robber - with a twist. Armed with an Uzi and nervous bravado, he's a criminal for the people rather than against them, a modern-day Robin Hood rescuing debt-ridden folks from the system's grasp by destroying bank mortgage documents. And now he's wanted by the police in five states.

Emilio Estevez and Demi Moore star as idealistic outlaws in a provocative thriller whisking you on an explosive cross-country odyssey in the lovers-on-the-run tradition of Bonnie and Clyde and True Romance. Writer/debuting director Estevez delivers all the crisp action, electrifying stunt work and sweaty tension required to keep you at seat's edge as you ride along.

Emilio Estevez showed talent above the rest of his Brat Pack peers in 1985 when he wrote That Was Then, This is Now, a decent film. But he topped that with this mini tour de force in Wisdom. Which he wrote, directed and co-starred in (with then fiance Demi Moore). The film isn't a masterpiece, and was generally panned by critics. But it has a very gritty feel that seemed to capture a bridge between the present day emptiness of youthful adolesence and what happens when fantasy goes awry.
Some may look at the film like a weak, modern recreation of Badlands, or Bonnie and Clyde, and Estevez could have really pulled the emotions further in showing the characters attempt at good deeds was mistaken, then ultimately malicious. He takes the film in that direction, but it's almost like he didn't want to go over the edge, so he backed off some. However, what the film attempts to do, to create a darker look at the post teen world, in an era when John Hughes films dominated the landscape, it does capture quite well. And is tinged with a certain hopelessness that will stand with you.
It's a shame that Estevez wasn't more highly praised for his efforts here, and the film should be released on DVD, hopefully with commentary by Emilio himself.

I got to thinking about this movie the other day while cracking open my new "High School Reunion Collection' DVDs. The last time I saw it was on ridiculously late night television about ten years ago. Even on awfully edited television it still had a certain rawness to it. It wasn't bad raw but, good raw. Very intense. Not to mention close to home with the Farm issues. (Nebraska ex-pat here.) Sadly, Wisdom is as Wisdom was...only available on VHS. Emilio! Bring this back to us on DVD!

Wisdom is one of those films that totally took me by surprise when I was a kid. I first saw it when I was ten years old and I immediately loved it. We rented it so many times we wore out the tape. Over the years I have tried to find it on home video, but never could. I read that Emilio Estevez hated it and had refused to release it again, which was a bummer. But thankfully Warners have decided to release it anyway, even if it is just a bare bones DVD. But at least it's widescreen. Highly recommended!

I was working in a video store in 1987 when this movie was released on VHS - otherwise I might have never even heard of it. I was intrigued to learn that Emilio had written and directed it himself.
Having recently seen Emilio, Demi, et al in "St. Elmo's Fire", I was anxious to view this film. I thoroughly enjoyed it. It's interesting to note the scenes that Emilio *directly* borrowed from the film in which his father starred with Sissy Spacek - "Badlands". The premise of the movie is different, but the story does revolve around a young couple "on the lam". I say "Bravo!" to Emilio's first foray into movie-making. I was and still am very impressed!
Now, let's just get it released on DVD and I'll be even happier!!!

This is a great memory from the 80's. Not the quality film that some of the other's from that era are...but still a good idea for a movie. It was unique and I had forgotten that it was directed by Estevez. Additionally, a great early role for Demi. It was worth the cost and it is part of Warner's "Archives" films that are somewhat hard to find these days.

Back in 1986 when this film came out times were definitely different. No budget problems, unemployment or forced foreclosures we see nowadays in the united states. Course in 86 i was a stupid 16 year old teenager who did not understand the plot of this movie but enjoyed it very much. Like many of these young actors of this era i was an angst ridden teen living in the awesome 80s that they were playing in these films. Now a mature educated 41 year old how true this films plot and themes holds true in today's times. Who knew Emilio Estevez had the future down to a t back in 86 to ring true in 2011, Sad but true. He made a great debut film filled with heart, action, suspense, and humor. Emilio and Demi just burn the screen with chemistry as young lovers on the run ala Bonnie and Clyde. Even though this is a dvd-r and no features or commentaries,it offers fabulous color and in widescreen and the surround sound rocks even though not in 5.1 its still AWESOME. The Warner archive collection is a great string of older films we all grew up with. Thanks amazon (again) and to the seller i got this from.

Loved this film as a nostalgic 80's romp! Finally on DVD, this DVD-R release from Warner Archive looks great but the only disappointment from my previous VHS and Laserdisc presentations is the fact that the soundtrack here is a MONO mix down. The original had a great Stereo/Dolby Surround spread that has been completely ruined here by the mono mix. Pity, otherwise it's the best this film has ever looked. Minus 1 star for the audio error!

This is a good "Emilio Estevez" movie. He has had some stinkers, but don't include this one... Good movie for a cold or rainy day when you are caught indoors. Good moral lesson for youngsters, although they probably won't pick up on it.
