I explored another style for Charlotte before landing on the final look.
This is Charlotte’s final look.
I first laid out scenes for the book with simple graphic elements.
Then illustrated them in black and white to capture the correct light and shadow.
Lastly I created the final color image.

ILLUSTRATIONS: The illustrations were created in watercolor. They are absolutely adorable and creative from the very first page. I love the details such as the treasure chest cradle, the house shaped as a ship, and all the Piratey details. The pictures are colorful and fun.
THE GOOD: I absolutely loved this book. These pirate parents showed so much love for their spirited little girl. The pirate elements tickled me pink( I do love a good pirate picture book). And of course this story shows what happens when little girls (even the hearty pirate children) don't go to bed when they should. I highly recommend this story!
THE DIFFICULT: There are quite a few big words this book that will need to be explained to the younger crowd such as hearty, formidable, and en garde.
NOTE: There is a lot of sword play
AGE RECOMMENDATION: Advertised for ages 4-8 which is a good age range. I don't know that I would recommend this necessarily as a bedtime story because of the high energy in the story.
Brilliant watercolor illustrations alternate full-bleed double-page spreads with pages using plenty of whitespace for contrast. The world depicted is a cheery suburban pirate-themed house. I liked the funny little details such as Charlotte's crib that appears to be fashioned out of an old rum cask. I loved her bedroom, which includes oceanic murals, a gangway plank, an oversize hammock/climbing net, and of course her ubiquitous teddy bear, One-Eyed Tom.
This would make a great bedtime read for reluctant young sleepers.
