Charlotte has a difficult decision to make, though it isn't whether (in fair Sydney, where we lay our scene) to poison herself, but only whether to betray her father's "ancient grudge" and worse, in his eyes, her own social class. Nor is Lance, necessarily, "a man so untouched and pure" of motive, so she has her suspicions, on both sides, and there *will* be a showdown that forces her to choose.
Charlotte is an intelligent and likeable young woman, and the reader feels impelled to root for her to make the right choice, even as it remains unclear until the last page, just what that choice is.
Charlotte realises that Lance’s environmental activism might also be a sore point with her father, especially when he’s about to stage a protest against a planned development south of the city at Helensburgh, which happens to be her father’s next project. Lance tells her that the development will destroy a pristine sanctuary for some of the most rare and endangered species in Australia. Help deciding on her own reaction to the situation comes from an unexpected quarter.
Sharp once again gives the reader an enjoyable sixties-era romance, although this one also touches on environmental issues. She always captures the era with consummate ease: the days when simple pleasures were a swim, a drive to the beach, going to a dance; when a treat was fish and chips or a bought ham sandwich; when cornflakes for breakfast was what everyone ate. Charlotte is a rather naïve heroine, just a teeny bit self-centred, but she manages to straighten out her priorities eventually. Short and sweet.
With thanks to the author for this copy to read and review.
With Charlotte's Lance and the Round Fable, Margaret Lynette Sharp has created a romantic novella for teens and young adults. Once again, the readers find themselves in Australia of the 1950s, including the mindsets of that era. Romance is not my typical genre, therefore I really like that this novella is not a hard-core romance. It is a very appealing read as it covers a controversial issue that is as important as it was then: profit versus environmental protection. Margaret Lynette Sharp draws you close to the protagonist and the topic at hand while the story evolves. I was drawn relatively close to Charlotte and her dilemma, silently encouraging her to do the right thing. The main characters are of sufficient depth, believable in their actions.
This is a book for you if you like young adult romance and are interested in environmental protection.
Lance’s father had views that went against everything Charlotte’s father believed in, and Lance had taken up the cause. The protection of the environment; the safety of endangered species and the involvement of the media to protest the upcoming plans were just a few of Lance’s ideals that Charlotte felt herself drawn toward.
Would Charlotte bow to her father’s wishes or follow Lance’s beliefs, and the direction her heart was taking her?
Charlotte’s Lance and the Round Fable (cute title!) by Aussie author Margaret Lynette Sharp is a little different to the author’s usual works. While still a light romance, it dwells on the issue of the environment and what can or cannot be done. Only short, nevertheless it’s a highly readable and entertaining story which I definitely recommend.
