About Charm Baker
Charm's love of books is what prompted her to become a writer and eventually an author. After reading Ralph Keyes' book "The Courage to Write" many years ago, she finally decided she had what it takes to pursue a writing career. Off and on, throughout the years, Charm has continued on her journalistic path. So far, the end result has been the release of multiple self-published ebooks (mostly on Amazon), and two full length novels, currently available in digital and print format.
As a special treat to readers who like getting the inside scoop, in the summer of 2019, Charm began hosting a new "Video Book Talk" series (Youtube channel). The videos share brief discussions about new and undiscovered Amazon authors and book titles.
Among the most recent discussions in the series are comments about the dark urban drama and coming-of-age novel "Skipping Childhood." Visitors get to listen and see what motivated Charm to write the book and what was her initial inspiration. When discussing her historical novel "Lights Out at the Moulin Rouge," Charm shows genuine enthusiasm and excitement. The facts surrounding this historical entertainment venue are curious and intriguing. Both titles and related book videos are on display here on Charm's author page.

She's obsessed and fascinated by the true stories of mob bosses, corrupt politicians, and sleazy business owners in 1950s Nevada. The issue of black entertainers and racial integration makes it all the more intriguing. She leaves Los Angeles on a Greyhound Bus and is determined to discover some answers. April is so excited that she refuses to give in to the warning signs that indicate she might actually be in danger. In the end, her Moulin Rouge adventure turns out to be so much more than she ever could have imagined.
When her and Gina first moved into their two-bedroom apartment, Gina saw April unpack the folder. It was tattered and bulging from all the contents inside. A thick rubber band was around it to help prevent everything from spilling out. April held on to the folder carefully, as if it were something fragile and she was afraid of breaking it. Gina coaxed it out of her hands and read the words written on the front in black marker.
“What’s MOULIN ROUGE, and why you acting like this raggedy old folder is a new born baby or something?”
April gave her a quick rundown about the 1955 casino, and what she had learned from Adam’s dad. She told Gina how much the story had intrigued, yet baffled her. She noticed how Gina listened with the same wide-eyed wonder that she herself had felt when she first heard about the casino’s history. Gina was incensed when she spoke.
“Are you freaking kidding me? So you mean to tell me that the place that was the first racially integrated casino in Nevada was a raving success, everybody and their mama was flocking to it, but it shut down in less than a year? If that ain’t some bullshit, I don’t know what is!”
Gina felt the very same indignation and disbelief that April had felt years earlier. It was hard to imagine how such a lavish and popular place could really have had such a short life span. April went on telling her about all the video interviews she’d seen online from former casino staff and entertainers. Everyone seemed to share the same disbelief about the bankruptcy and other controversial issues.
“Damn April! That’s a hell of a story. There’s no telling what was going on back then, between all that racial crap, plus all the mob stuff!”
“I know. It’s a trip, huh? That’s why I plan on writing a book about the whole thing. It was really coldblooded how they just swooped in and closed the place down one day.”
“Yep!. I read that The Gaming Casino Board came in and closed down all the games and the cashiers, then they literally escorted people out the doors. It said that people were running around like crazy trying to grab their chips and money in a hurry before getting out of there!” *******

When it comes to children who kill, Deandra is not your everyday adolescent murderer. Mr. Ben, Deandra’s first victim, was practically an accident. She was only twelve-years-old at the time. But even still, the man’s sudden death had been a quick solution to the problem she was having. Actually, HE was the problem, in the exact same way as her new foster father. After miraculously getting away with killing Mr. Ben, Deandra discovers how easy it is to live with killing a man. She never really planned to ever do it again, but when she did, it was much more thought out.
It was hard trying to survive ghetto life when she lived with her mother, Diane. The one bright light during Deandra’s abusive childhood was meeting Romeo, the absolute love of her life. Her feelings for him were so strong, she’d do anything to help him, even kill again. The second time around is even easier for Deandra, because by now she’s turning into a borderline sociopath. Before reaching the age of 18, killing a man would become just as easy to her, as it was to live with the secret of killing a man.
After her abandonment, Deandra learns that life in foster care is all about dealing with sexual harassment and assault. So again and again, she takes matters into her own hands.
This is a compelling story of sexual and emotional abuse and one little girl’s suffering from the pain of neglect and abandonment. Can this budding young sociopath ever find happiness? Maybe if the body count stops rising!
