The Charm Offensive: A Novel Paperback – September 7, 2021

A BEST BOOK PICK BY * HARPER’S BAZAAR * ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY
“The Charm Offensive will sweep you off your feet.” —PopSugar
In this witty and heartwarming romantic comedy—reminiscent of Red, White & Royal Blue and One to Watch—an awkward tech wunderkind on a reality dating show goes off-script when sparks fly with his producer.
Dev Deshpande has always believed in fairy tales. So it’s no wonder then that he’s spent his career crafting them on the long-running reality dating show Ever After. As the most successful producer in the franchise’s history, Dev always scripts the perfect love story for his contestants, even as his own love life crashes and burns. But then the show casts disgraced tech wunderkind Charlie Winshaw as its star.
Charlie is far from the romantic Prince Charming Ever After expects. He doesn’t believe in true love, and only agreed to the show as a last-ditch effort to rehabilitate his image. In front of the cameras, he’s a stiff, anxious mess with no idea how to date twenty women on national television. Behind the scenes, he’s cold, awkward, and emotionally closed-off.
As Dev fights to get Charlie to connect with the contestants on a whirlwind, worldwide tour, they begin to open up to each other, and Charlie realizes he has better chemistry with Dev than with any of his female co-stars. But even reality TV has a script, and in order to find to happily ever after, they’ll have to reconsider whose love story gets told.

Editorial Reviews
Review
“Cochrun’s polished, smart, and delightful debut romance delivers all the quintessential feel-good moments of a great romcom... In between the meet-cute, quippy banter, and red-hot sexual chemistry, Cochrun also offers readers a thoughtful and caring exploration of gay love and the mental health struggles people with social anxiety and depression deal with every day.” —Booklist (starred review)
"Fans of 'The Bachelor' will fall in love with Cochrun’s sweet spin on a reality dating show....The Charm Offensive urges readers to scrutinize which love stories get told in Hollywood and pushes for a future where everyone gets to see themselves living happily ever after." —USA Today
"A swoon-worthy debut." —Harper's Bazaar
"The Charm Offensive is a heartwarming rom-com with unforgettable characters who will challenge you to see love in a new light. Set behind the scenes of the fictional TV show Ever After, Alison Cochrun is unafraid to flip reality TV's tired tropes into fresh storylines. With entertaining insight into how the happily-ever-after sausage gets made and nuanced discussions about mental health and sexuality, this witty, moving page-turner is nothing short of delightful. Networks would be wise to take cues from Cochrun's ode to reality TV romance."
—Hannah Orenstein, author of Head Over Heels
"This book is my new obsession. As a longtime (and long-suffering) Bachelor fan, I grinned at all the winks to the franchise, cheered at the subversions of reality TV tropes, and grew faint as Dev and Charlie danced closer to embracing their true feelings—and even truer selves. Heart-stoppingly romantic and radiantly empathetic." —Rachel Lynn Solomon, author of The Ex Talk
"The Charm Offensive will sweep you off your feet." —PopSugar
“[R]eaders seeking romance that prioritizes inclusive explorations of sexual identity and mental illness will treasure this.” —Publishers Weekly
“With its lush locales and LGBTQ and BIPOC representation, this novel shines, especially for readers underrepresented or underappreciated in mainstream romance. For fans of Kate Stayman-London’s One To Watch and Casey McQuiston’s Red, White & Royal Blue.” —Library Journal
“Alison Cochrun twines an earnest exploration of mental health and sexuality through a truly memorable love story… Cochrun’s clever behind-the-scenes glimpses of ‘Ever After’ will delight reality TV fans, but it’s The Charm Offensive’s tenderness and deep, believable emotion that will linger in readers’ hearts.” —BookPage (starred review)
“Perfect for fans of Casey McQuiston and Cat Sebastian . . . . The Charm Offensive is a funny, diverse, subversive romance that brings an unexpected happily ever after to a reality dating show.” —Shelf Awareness
“[N]ot just a fluffy LGBTQ+ rom-com. It starts out looking as though it might be a scathing satirical sendup of reality TV romance dating franchises, then subtly segues into a searing exploration of gender identity, sexism and mental health... The Charm Offensive succeeds in becoming an enthralling, entertaining and thought-provoking novel.”—Portland Oregonian
“This book is special. It is sweet and funny, the way rom-com novels ought to be, but it’s also deeply honest about the human experience.” —Book Reporter

Location: Shot pre-carriage exits at the Beverly Hilton’s ballroom
Lauren L., 25, Dallas, professional cat cuddler: When I heard Charles Winshaw was going to be the next Ever After prince, I knew I had to audition to be a contestant. He is literally everything I’ve been looking for in a man. I mean, he’s strong, but you can tell he’s also sensitive.
Megan, 24, Tampa, spray-tan technician: Why did I come on this show? I’ll give you eight reasons, and all of them are Charles Winshaw’s abs.
Delilah, 26, Los Angeles, software engineer: Charles Winshaw is a legend in the tech world. This will be like dating the Michael Jordan of app design. You know, if Michael Jordan were notoriously private and mysterious. My friends are going to be so jealous.
Lauren S., 23, Little Rock, former student: I’ve had my heart broken in the past, but I’m older and wiser now. I’m ready to find love again. I’m ready to be a wife. I’m ready to be a mom.
Whitney, 31, Kansas City, pediatric nurse: Did I think I’d already be married at thirty-one? I mean, yeah. But it’s given me extra time to get to know myself. I’ve spent years taking care of sick babies. Now I’m ready to take care of a man.
Sabrina, 27, Seattle, travel blogger: My life is pretty rad, honestly. I’m just looking for a partner to make it even radder.
Daphne, 25, Atlanta, social worker: Why did I come on this show? Gosh, um, you know, the same reason as everyone else. I’m here for love—the kind of love you see in movies and hear about in songs. Love that changes you, love that conquers all. Everyone talks about that kind of love, so it must be real, right?

Audio: ★★★★
I love this book! though I enjoy the beautiful love story between Charlie and Dev so much, my favorite part of the book is the brilliant storytelling and the unexpected outcomes.
First is the story background. The story happens under the background of a popular reality TV show "Ever After", which is about helping attractive heterosexual couples fall in love. The show was all about the heterosexual, the middle class, and the attractive white people. And the show was extremely masculism too because the design is that ten beautiful women compete to be the future wife of the prince charming. Sarcastically, Charlie, the prince charming of this season, inevitably falls in love with his gay producer Dev, who happens to be a big fan of "Ever After" since teenager. So this is actually a homosexual love story that happens in a heteronormative environment. What happens beyond the show is exactly the opposite of what has been set in the show.
Then the character development is impressive. In the beginning, Charlie is the passive one in the relationship because of his unconfidence while Dev is the optimistic one. But along with the ties deepening, Charlie becomes more and more mature and relaxed while Dev's depression occurs. It's Dev's faith in the idea of being "happy ever after" that saves Charlie from numbness to love. On the other hand, it's Charlie's brave to reach for love that helps Dev to overcome his depression and regain his faith in "happy ever after".
Finally, the ending is perfect. Not the HEA-type of excellent (of course there is a HEA), but the ideal closure of the storylines. Every foreshadowing hits get responses at the end: Charlie's job and Dev's dream, the meaning and the change of the show, and the interpretation of love and HEA. When I finished the book I just found that it's such a perfect circle.
Although there aren't any sexy and hot scenes in the book at all, it's heartwarming, funny and brilliant.
The only thing I don't like is the audiobook. Sometimes the tone and the volume are not in the way I expected.
I needed a bit of a reset so I picked this book up. It'd been on my list for ages but now felt like the right time to read it. I was pretty immediately sucked in, from the moment Charlie fell out of a car at Dev's feet.
Charlie and Dev go on quite the emotional journey! It's lovely to see all the diversity and representation and feel like it was authentically done. This book is queer as heck and I'm HERE for it. Watching Charlie learn about himself, watching him figure out what words fit and whether that's even important to him, was such a dagger to the heart. I've been there. It was beautifully done and painfully real.
I love the mental health focus. It's clear from the beginning that Charlie is working through a lot when it comes to his mental health. Seeing him own and celebrate his unique brain made me so happy. Dev does an excellent job of convincing everyone, <i>the reader included</i>, that he's okay when he isn't. Massive props to the narrative voice for capturing that so completely.
The ending is *chef's kiss* This whole book is a wonderful celebration of what makes each of us unique. Everyone should read it!
These characters were so fun--the mix of awkward missteps and them being there for each other, in the crazy world of reality tv, with idealized love and behind the scenes reality and real life love juxtaposed in a way that made it oh so fun to watch. I especially liked all the fun travel and tv-show details.
The way I found this book was the following: a friend saw that this author's other book, "Kiss Her Once for Me" had 57 holds on it at a rural library in Indiana. FIFTY SEVEN. What author has that kind of library pull?! So I looked up this book, saw the premise, and literally gasped out loud (I'm a hopeless sucker for "behind the scenes" stuff with tv shows, and romance, so behind the scenes in a tv show centered on love, WITH gay characters? FORGETABBOUTIT). However, I've seen a few books with variations on this theme that haven't hit home for me, so I was wary. Grabbed the free sample, and I was immediately sucked in by the wit and charm of the characters, and it just kept getting better from there.
Also, I must mention my favorite quote: "I don't think happily ever after is something that happens to you, Dev. I think it's something you choose to do for yourself." YES
KILLER finale. Did I mention the finale? I can't explain without spoilering you, but definitely an above-average ending for romance. Grab a copy--don't even bother getting in the line at the library, it's gonna be too long, and NOW I SEE WHY.

Reader, it was AMAZING. I am in LOVE with this book. I love Dev and Charlie and Jules and Parisa and I laughed like SO much, proper hilarious, but I also cried? I can’t remember the last time a rom com had me in tears but my god.
THIS BOOK.
Read it IMMEDIATELY.
It did manage to make me almost cry a couple of times and the writing just had me devouring the pages. It's a comfort read 90% of the time and an emotional roller coaster the remaining 10%. Maybe I'll give it a re-read one of these days...
