3.5 stars.

Ther Purgatory world is an interesting one and I am enjoying the series mostly because of the imaginative world building.
But...
The writing is so overwroth that it almost slips into purple prose at times. The couple when they are together are painfully overwritten.
It made me roll my eyes several times instead of going all mushy...
Also - every single character was bigger then life in one way or another. That's exhausting. There must be some graduation of intensity or it gets too much.
It felt like too much most of the time.
Yet..
I'll be getting the next book in the series - no doubt about it. I really, really want to know what happens next in that awesome world. And I've got some hope the next couple will be better.

So I recommend this book and the whole series for the fascinating world building. But be aware that the writing is a bit...well, overloaded with paranormal romance cliches.

I received this copy via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

Charming the Beast by Cynthia Eden was absolutely amazing! This is the first book I've ever read by Cynthia Eden, and I have to say I'm seriously impressed. I also haven't read the previous books in this series, but was able to follow along easily with no issues. Eden clearly explains and gives you ample background on the characters as you advance in the story. I'd easily say you could read this as a standalone, but bet it would be even better if you read the series-which I plan to do;)

Connor and Chloe make a fantastic couple. Connor is a damaged hero, he's a scarred man with horrors most people couldn't even begin to imagine. He's also a mixed breed of vampire and werewolf, a terrifying mix of monster resides within him. Connor could be a monster, but he's absolutely the opposite in this story. He's caring and strong with his focus being on protecting those around him, especially Chloe. Chloe is definitely a girl that had an extremely horrible and hard life growing up. Even though she's gone through some seriously sick stuff she's still a fighter, she won't let anyone imprison her. She's also got a big heart and an innocence that is unusual in her world.

The story itself is awesome. I loved the plot and the pace of the story, the romantic parts of this story were well placed. There wasn't any odd veering off track, everything that happened led to the conclusion and helped tie into the story. This book was certainly unique showing multiple points of view, one of them being the evil guy. I haven't ever read a story where you actually get to see what the evil guy is thinking. I also enjoyed the fact that each perspective gave interesting info, it wasn't just a copy of what was already shown. Each voice was very unique.

I'd definitely recommend to paranormal romance lovers and shifter fans. This is an 18+ story, there are sex scenes.

Chloe is a turned werewolf who can't shift. After years of being an unwilling lab rat for her father, she's finally gained her freedom from him only to be imprisoned again--albeit for her own good--by the Seattle Para Unit. Seems that something her not so dear old dad did to her has altered her scent in a way that is attracting and distracting to other werewolves. Connor is an unwilling agent for the Para Unit, and Chloe's current jailer. He's justifiably cranky, controlled, and not exactly your typical werewolf.

Within the course of the story Chloe has reason to wonder if Connor's attraction to her is simply because of her altered scent, and I have to say that was my thought as well. There is just so little build-up with regard to their attraction that it feels like it happens out of the blue. Though, admittedly, I have no idea how long the couple had been in contact at the start of the book, which brings me to my next point.

The book doesn't really work as a stand alone. There is enough talk about the past for the reader to sort of fill in some of the blanks, but definitely not enough to completely alleviate confusion. Sadly, there is just no real happy medium in that regard. Honestly, if I had read the first two novels in the series I am certain that this going over and over the backstory would be a great annoyance, but as it stands it reads more as quick synopsis with a lot of information missing.

My main problem with the book has to be the dialog. The word play itself is not horrible, but some of the execution is. To be blunt, if everyone in the book could stop talking like Captain Kirk, it would be nice. I mean, really...the constant...ellipses...are a little...much.

**For the sake of full disclosure it must be stated that I received this book, free of charge, from Netgalley.**

Hard to get into because I couldn't remember the story in the last in the series. This book just assumes that you remember everything in detail, so very little is explained. With so many characters and so much going on, that makes things a bit tricky to follow. I also felt that the relationship between the hero and heroine just wasn't developed enough. The whole thing felt rushed to me. I don't plan to read any more in this series.

I have been a long time fan of Ms Eden. I buy almost anything she writes or at least borrow it from the library. I found this book intense with emotion. A young woman with no self esteem with a conviction she is both unworthy and unlovable. Kept virtually a prisoner by her insane father. Subjected to ongoing experiments to turn her into a werewolf. She falls in love with her guard. He mates her. She is killed again, comes back again. And then nearly dies permanently saving her mate. She takes a long time to come back yet again...this time as a vampire and half wolf....you feel every minute of her emotional turmoil and her mates growing feelings for his little survivor. Worth the time.
