We also get to see Lisa struggle with her emotions where love and relationships are concerned. A new love interest enters the picture, and another one makes himself known, though only time will tell which route Lisa will take. A lot of emotion can be felt while reading through various scenes and my heart ached for Lisa at times.
By the end, Charming Incantations: Sanguine is a great follow-up to book one, Charming Incantations: Enticed. Characters grow, personalities change, sacrifices are made, and The Alliance must come together in their time of desperation if everyone, paranormal beings and humans alike, want to survive. I'm excited to see where the next book takes this adventure.
This book has vampires, shape-shifters, werewolves, witches, banshees, goblins, trolls. Not to mention my favorite vamp, Milosh, who I wanted more of.
The book is geared to the Young Adult crowd but I didn't mind. The second installment continues to follow Lisa, the Human Representative caught in a world of supernatural baddies.
The characters are extremely believable, the dialogue wasn't stiff and in some cases, the dialogue was downright hilarious.
The plot kept me hooked. The characters were very likeable and believable. I'm definitely Team Milosh! Again, I just couldn't get enough of that vampire.
Fans of the series will enjoy this second installment! I sure did. It was a fun read. I can't wait for the third book!
Team Milosh all the way!
It's a Buffyesque fun story, with some well-written sexy-but-without-actual-sex scenes, and some strong female characters, such as Lisa herself, going through the pangs of a recent relationship bust-up and dealing with everyday life as well as a somewhat more magical one; and Vampyre Queen Annabella Wolmerans with her administrative problems, great dress sense, politely preoccupied with running a war against the goblins. The King of whom is Lisa's father, Frank. It gets more complicated than that, too!
Oh, and I'm in the Milosh camp. Just saying.
Sanguine by Monique Snyman is the sequel to Enticed and picks up with a haunting prologue starring Lisa, Milosh, and Romulus. A vampire civil war threatens to break the Alliance and it is up to Milosh to stop it. With Romulus and Lisa on the outs and Milosh out of town, Lisa is left as the only Alliance member to face the Goblin King. To make matters worse, there is a traitor in the Alliance. Can Lisa and the others figure it out before everything falls apart?
Characters New and Old
Oh my! Where do I start?! I read this book in one sitting and really couldn't make myself put it down. My favorite characters are back (Lisa, Rome, and Milosh) along with a few new characters that I really like (the Vampyre Queen Annabella Wolmerans, Caleb, and Nicola).
Lisa is still one strong young woman. She is now living independently, working in a bar part-time, and for the Alliance the rest of the time. Her relationship with Romulus is well OVER! The prologue actually has the scene, let's just say his wolf side got the better of him...
Oh Romulus.....not so handsome anymore. In fact, I kind of loathed him this book. He's so mean to Lisa and well just not the suave suitor from Enticed.
And Milosh!! I love him! This book we see more of him and get a glimpse into his past. His friendship with Lisa is amazingly sweet and I'm rooting for him a bit ;)
The Vampyre Queen, Annabella Wolmerans, is introduced during chapter one when Milosh and Lisa are brought before her in an effort to stop the civil war. Or at least get information to stop it. She's one scary chick! In fact, I find her eerie calmness and candor scarier than the crazy Goblins. She's quite honest and upfront with Lisa about what she wants and how she plans to get it, but she also likes to stir up trouble, giving Lisa just enough information to make her mad but also leave her confused and hurt. Don't get me wrong, she's not a villain. In fact, I'm still not sure where she stands...
Nicola is her progeny, a handsome ruthless vampire who breaks all the rules. He is obsessed with Lisa and not even the commands of his Queen will make him stop the hunt. He's scary, not as creepy as the Queen but scary all the same.
Then there's Caleb. Caleb is a sweet, innocent human boy that Lisa meets while working at the bar. He's the son's owner, and he likes her. In fact I'd say he more than likes her and I like him too! More Caleb, pretty please!!
As I predicted, Sanguine moves at a much faster pace than Enticed. The world-building is pretty much done, though the author does some while describing the vampire world. The characters are well-established, so that leaves more time for the plot. This time there are three plots going on: the vampire civil war, the traitor in the Alliance, and a bit of a love triangle (or square may be the better word).
The vampires have a bit of a war going on and Milosh is left to find the Sanguinista Heirs, five humans that can change the course of the war if the rebels have them. This is the main plot and revolves around Milosh and the secrets the Queen slowly reveals to Lisa. It's exciting and suspenseful and I loved learning more about Milosh.
The traitor in the Alliance or suspected traitor is actually something Milosh and Lisa both suspected in book one, but never had any proof. This leaves the Alliance broken and heads spinning as slow truths are revealed. This sub-plot ties in well with the main plot and I couldn't predict anything as I was too engrossed in the story to try!
Then the love triangle...square...no triangle...
So it doesn't matter what story it is, love triangles always make me roll my eyes. I can't help it! This triangle has Lisa at it's center with Romulus, Caleb, and Milosh at its corners. However it is resolved fairly quickly, and I surprised myself by rooting for someone other than the first love interest. Usually I always root for the guy that stole my heart first, not this time...no I rooted for Milosh, then Caleb, then Milosh, then Caleb....:::sigh::: You get the picture ;)
:::insert super whiny voice::: When does Labyrinth come out? But no, seriously I cannot wait for book three of this series. The author does a wonderful job of building suspense and setting up the plot for the next book, leaving me the reader begging for more. Overall, if you enjoy mature young adult literature mixed with urban fantasy, I highly recommend it. Now if I can find something to do while I wait for book three....
