She points out that not every aspect of a chart is necessary to interpret, but I'm still self training so I can't take anyone's word for that. It's a good book for study but I can't ascertain whether or not it is an essential book to for study. Wish I could be of more help.

There are many books on how to learn astrology, such as Basil Farrington presenting the Noel Tyl Method, or Astrology the Divine Science by Marcia Moore and Mark Douglas.
There are also many books on the philosophy of Astrology by authors such as Dane Rudyar and Stephen Arroyo.
What is lacking is a synthesis minded practical workbook(there are plenty of examples in Basil Farrington but the work is not exclusively dedicated to exercises and questions).
