Chasing Diets: Stop the Endless Search and Discover the Solution Paperback – January 14, 2019
Purchase options and add-ons
America is addicted to dieting. There are millions of people who are sick—sick of being overweight. These people have been chasing diets over a lifetime and are ready to stop their endless searching and discover a solution to weight loss. There are thousands of diets and tens of thousands of diet books; each month a new diet book comes out with new promise and new hope. They all fail sooner or later, leaving the dieter ever more hopeless and more discouraged. Studies of self-help diets usually show no greater than ten pounds of weight loss after one year. In truth, self-help dieting is a no-win venture. Self-help and “next best diet” approaches ignore the fact that obesity is a medical disease that, in most people, requires medical treatment.Doctors Craig Primack, MD and Robert Ziltzer, MD discuss the shortcomings of self-help diets, and more importantly show dieters how to find a weight loss program that works—for life! Founders of Scottsdale Weight Loss Center in Arizona, Drs. Ziltzer and Primack have worked with thousands of patients who have found that medical management is the essential ingredient to success. The four-pronged comprehensive weight loss program explained in Chasing Diets is designed to use all the tools available today: medical management, proper nutrition, activity and sleep, and education. Used together, these tools can empower people who struggle with obesity to stop the search and arrive at a solution for losing and maintaining goal weight.

About the authors

Craig Primack MD, FACP, FAAP, FOMA
I am a physician who specializes in the field of obesity medicine (medical weight loss). I am certified by The American Board of Obesity Medicine in addition to board certifications in Internal Medicine and in Pediatrics.
I see patients full-time and am co-founder of Scottsdale Weight Loss Center with 4 locations in Arizona (Scottsdale, Chandler, Phoenix and Glendale). We have 5 physicians certified by the American Board of Obesity Medicine, the most certified Obesity Medicine Physicians in the state of Arizona as well as the most certified Obesity Medicine Physicians in a private clinic in the US.
I am proud to have been listed as one of Phoenix Magazine’s Top Docs in 2018, 2017, 2015, 2014, 2012, 2011, 2010, 2009, and 2008.
Since 2010, I have served on the Board of Directors for the Obesity Medicine Association-- a professional society of over 2500 clinicians -- We are the clinical leaders in obesity medicine who work to advance the prevention, treatment, and reversal of the disease of obesity. In 2017, I was elected president-elect of the Obesity Medicine Association and will begin serving as president in the fall of 2019.
My belief is in a comprehensive and personalized approach to weight loss. As a medical weight loss doctor, I focus on prescribing weight loss programs that are tailored to my patients’ personalized needs and clinically proven to provide safe and significant weight loss and as well as lessening the severity of weight-related conditions including diabetes, high blood pressure and high cholesterol.

Robert Ziltzer, MD, FACP, FAAP Obesity Medicine Physician, Marathoner, Ironman Triathlete
“As long as I can remember, I wanted to be a physician. I was, and still am, always driven by the opportunity to make a difference in peoples’ lives. I care for my patients as I would my family.” He attended Albany Medical College and residency in Phoenix, Arizona where he became board certified in both internal medicine and pediatrics. He began his medical practice in 1991 as an internal medicine and pediatric physician.
As a primary care physician, Dr. Ziltzer valued the long-term relationships he developed with his patients, but sensed a frustration that there had to be a more productive and transformative way to treat many of the chronic health issues his patients were facing.
“In med school they didn’t teach us how to help patients lose weight, they didn’t teach us how to treat obesity.” To help these patients, he wanted something more than a prescription pad and a referral to Weight Watchers.
This lack of a more defined medial approach to weight loss and weight-related illness was something he related to professionally and experienced personally. His father, who was moderately overweight, suffered his first heart attack at age 52 and died from his second heart attack at 57.
In 2006, Dr. Ziltzer, along with Dr. Craig Primack pursued specialty training and became board certified in obesity medicine, and introduced a comprehensive medical weight loss program in their primary care practice. The results were so dramatic, and the response by patients was so overwhelming that by the end of the year they transitioned out of primary care practice and founded Scottsdale Weight Loss Center.
“It is incredibly gratifying when I hear people tell me about the huge changes in their lives as a result of losing weight.”
Dr. Ziltzer personally believes in healthy lifestyles, and became a marathon runner at the age of 41. He has completed 10 marathons, several half-ironman triathlons and one Ironman Triathlon. He has been voted one of PHOENIX Magazine’s Top Docs 12 times. He is a national speaker on obesity related topics.
Dr. Ziltzer is married and lives in Phoenix and has two children.

Like many of you, I have tried many diet books, meal plans, fitness plans, etc. to lose weight; only to gain it back as I could not maintain that lifestyle. I just could not maintain the regimen for months or years. When I was 40 years old, I lost 40 lbs and in my mind, I thought I was very healthy.
When I was approaching my 50th birthday, my wife one evening said “…I love you and I want you to live a long life, but I am worried… that you may not… as you have gained weight (70 lbs) since you were 40… Let’s schedule a meeting with Dr. Ziltzer.”
Chasing Diets: Stop the Endless Search and Discover the Solution by Dr. Ziltzer & Dr. Craig Primack from the Scottsdale Weight Loss Center will provide you with all of information and step by step instructions to be successful at your weight loss lifestyle.
If you desire to lose and maintain your weight loss - what I have learned is this:
Be ready to change your lifestyle.
Be ready to change the way you eat (and eat out).
Be ready for some type of activity. I found an easy one that I really like - walking.
If you control the amount of calories that you eat - all the exercise that you need to lose weight and maintain weight loss is to walk. Just walk my friends.
Personally for me. I have maintained a weight loss of 50 pounds for over 1 year and I am currently in the process of losing an additional 20 pounds to reach my goal weight and I will maintain it for the rest of my life.
As a family, we make it a priority to walk every day or every other day and our goal is to walk 10,000 steps a day. Also for exercise, my son and I thought we would try something fun - something different. Together we started learning the martial art of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and just recently earned a Blue Belt – something that I would have never tried with my son – 50 pounds ago!

Dr. Primack has a unique knack for saying just the right thing I need for added motivation or to help me look at an issue in a different way. Reading this book, it became even more clear just how much he truly does understand every issue we face. The book spoke to me on many levels, from childhood issues carried into adulthood, social anxiety, people’s reactions or comments, and how all of these different factors make us feel and impact what we are trying to accomplish.
One of the many reasons that I specially chose Scottsdale Weight Loss is because I have never been successful in maintaining weight loss. In reading about the science behind how one’s body reacts to significant weight loss, I was initially discouraged. That being said, I firmly believe that knowledge is power. The clear and concise way in which the science was presented is easy to understand and it reinforced that I am going to need Dr. Primack’s help and expertise going forward. I now know why that stage is so difficult and that I will need to be laser focused during this stage and throughout the rest of my life.
I am so grateful that Dr. Ziltzer and Dr. Primack found their calling within the medical field and offer these great programs so people like me can live a healthier and much more fulfilling live. With a busy practice, many physicians wouldn’t take the time to write a book to give us another helpful tool for success. I truly don’t know where I would be today without their help!
--Kami Ellison
They recommend a flexible mixture of strategies pertaining to: sleep, support/education, medications, an eating plan and exercise. Very refreshing that they don’t advocate a “one size fits all” approach that often leads to frustration for those of us who don’t “fit.”
After reading the book I went to their clinic. Just started yesterday. I am hopeful this will lead to a healthier life for me.
