A very entertaining film. Lots of surprises, lots of fun.

I saw most of this on YouTube, though it's not clear if I was supposed to.

Excellently done job, very similar to "King of Kong." Fans of that move will definitely want to catch this one, as it features much of the same material and even the same principal characters. As one metafilter commenter wrote, though, it lacks that movie's "narrative drive." But unlike that movie, this one makes the video game fanatics seem much more loserly, although apparently not intentionally.

The thing is, I don't know where to buy it. It was evidently finished in 2006 but apparently has neither been released in theaters or on DVD. I guess these guys have the film in the can but can't find a distributor: who knows?

Chasing Ghosts: Beyond the Arcade (Lincoln Ruchti, 2007)

In an age of home videogame machines, it's difficult to explain the hold coin-op arcades had over those of us who came of age in the late seventies and early eighties. Eight-bit graphics, bleeps and bloops, and a whole generation of kids pumping quarter after quarter into these things to get their fixes. I was one of them; Venture and Tempest ate up as much of my time then as the Internet does now. But, as it turns out, I was just a piker when it came to videogames. You want to see the real stars, check this off-the-wall documentary out.

Chasing Ghosts tracks down and interviews those who were bona fide superstars, briefly, during the videogame revolution. Turns out they never really gave up chasing after the fleeting fame and fortune, for the most part; in some cases, rivalries continue to this day (at least as of the time of the film's release). As with most neurotic obsessives, these people are amusing and scary in equal amounts, and are thus a lot of fun to watch.

I do expect that those of us of a certain age are more likely to enjoy this than the younger generation; there's no real attempt at an explanation of why coin-op videogames captured our imagination (and endless quarters), which I think might have opened this up to a wider audience. But still, if you were there, this is a great deal of fun, and well worth your time. ***

The worst thing about this moving is that 80 percent of it is REALLY good (worth 4-5 stars). Great performances from Michael Madsen, Michael Rooker, Tom Wright. Every actor pretty much gives the the movie his/her best effort ... except Corey Large and Shannyn Sossamon.

Large and Sossamon are awful. THESE WERE THE BEST PEOPLE AT THE AUDITION? The producers should have advertised the auditions better. They drag the movie down to 2 stars. Sossamon was given hollow, awkward, and mostly unemotional lines and she's going to do her best to make them sound hollow, awkward, and unemotional.

Large's character is a little more developed... although after watching the movie, you wish he hadn't been. Every moment with Large speaking is another moment of your life you'll never get back. Large walks through most of the movie wearing a tie with his shirt untucked... I guess because the writers think that's cool? He just looks like a douche. Even the "unexpected twist" at the end which may explain some of his idiosyncracies doesn't save his character. It just makes you want to punch yourself in the face for sitting through the whole movie.

The movie really comes into its own in the apartment scene with Large visiting Sossamon. It's clear that neither really knows what to do next. Without other actors in the scene giving them cues, they just stand there staring at each other. Or maybe that's what the director told them to do. The whole thing just left me with the weirdest feeling that I was seeing the setup for a porno.

Michael Madsen is a good actor, I first saw him in the television drama 'The Big Apple' and enjoyed his performance. This film is quite good without being riveting. I wish they'd toned the music down, especially towards the end.
