I found the insights into the recruiting world to be fascinating. The story about E*TRADE, in particular, was crazy, 1000 jobs filled in one year, I didn't know a recruiting firm could pull that off, and this was Michael's side hustle.
Reading about the highs and lows in his life was difficult. Seeing how he was successful on the outside but destroying himself on the inside is what recovery books are about. Getting to know the person and their struggle really impressed on me that I should be slow to judge and quick to listen.
My favorite parts of the book were the questions at the end of most chapters, after reading about how Michael faced an addiction or found a new path, he then asks, "What might that look like for you?"
I also enjoyed reading about the trip to Bali and finding Flow. Perhaps this resonated with me personally, I'm not sure but I found myself agreeing with a lot of what the author wrote in those chapters.
Great book, it inspired me to start a new habit, to focus on my business and put my energy into making it successful, doing the hard work and not hiding from difficult things!
I think that the book is really about a journey that made him realize he was chasing something invaluable. He found comfort in helping others, serenity and close friends.
It’s a good book for anybody who is dealing with addiction, but also an unhappy life, unrealistic personal expectations or an incredibly busy work life.
Until I read Chasing the High, I’m not sure I ever understood how awful a gambling addiction could be... How it infiltrated all aspects of Dash’s life. It was eye-opening and devastating.
I’d recommend this book to anyone with the dual diagnosis of being an entrepreneur and *anything* else. You’ll get something out of it!
