The story centers on Isabelle Van Helsing, a fierce warrior against all things supernatural. Everything is business as usual for her until a friend and coworker is brutally murdered by a supernatural entity. This sets her down a path that will challenge her skills as a fighter as well as test her humanity. Joining her is her lover McGrady, a Scottish version of Gerard Butler.
This book is a paranormal romance and therefore contains some ‘romantic’ scenes that surpass some other paranormal romances I’ve read.
The best part of this book isn’t the creatures, cool weapons, sex scenes, or the characters. The thing that makes this book so great is the way Kindra Sowder weaves her tale together. Anyone can throw Van Helsing and monsters together and try and make it look cool, if you don’t believe me check out the movie “Van Helsing” (2004), but Sowder delivers where others have failed.
Sowder creates such rich characters that makes the reader believe that they are real. McGrady for example talks with a heavy Scottish accent and when you read it, you’ll find yourself speaking out loud in that same accent. Sowder makes the reader care about the characters. If they live you’ll cheer, if they die you’ll most likely cry or even curse Sowder. You’ll keep reading though, because the writing hooks you from page one.
The action scenes are intense and fast paced while the ‘romantic’ scenes are steamy (I dislike this word but there’s no other way to say it) and just as intense as the action scenes.
I won’t spoil anything else with this review, but I would encourage readers of all genres, not just paranormal romance, to check out “Chasing Shadows.” It has a little bit of everything.

Izzy and Jonas oh my where do I start? Vampires, demons and witches, intense action filled with dialogue and a fast paced story flow. This is a story of love, loss and Good versus evil. Izzy is a Van Helsing and she is no stranger to the monsters seen and unseen in her world. Jonas is Izzy’s lover and partner. Jonas is a Scottish man and each scene with the dialogue from Jonas is spelled out and told in the Scottish accent and this dialogue is portrayed exceptionally well and that’s no easy feat for a writer to do successfully. Dialogue is hard enough for a writer to portray and a reader to enjoy but when I writer successfully changes character perspective with a different accent back and forth so well then that in itself makes this story worth reading. Next we have some steamy passionate moments interlaced with tense fight scenes all of which is timed exceptionally well. These supernatural monsters, demons and other villains are represented very well and I found myself making correlations with many television shows and other stories that have stayed with me a long time. Izzy is always under threat but she’s strong in body and spirit and not lacking in certain talents that help her through this world that mirrors our own. Ambience for each chapter or scene was done with supportive description that helped me imagine easily as I read this story. The flow of the story was smooth and fast. The attention to detail for each scene wither a playful, lustful, action packed or calm moments was done on a level that kept me interested from beginning to end. This wasn’t my first story read by this author and nor will it be my last. Fans of vampires, demons and witches and a strong female lead character will love this story. Izzy may be special or talented but her humanity was always prevalent throughout this story.
There were a couple of things that held me back from giving this amazing story line a full five stars and I think it's important to note that these are purely personal issues. The first being the accent McGrady has. While I love a good accent in my characters, I found it being completely written out was distracting. Not that it wasn't excellently done. The dialogue flowed well, but this became a personal hangup as I tried to ensure I was reading it all correctly, and I'm sure not everyone will fill this way. The second, and probably most important, was I went in to this book expecting a paranormal romance.and although there were plenty of romantic aspects, the plot would have been exactly the same if the main(s) weren't in a relationship. Again, personal preference. Not everyone will feel this way.
