Cons: too large to carry, not for casual Châteauneuf consumer
The author is clearly fanatical about Châteauneuf-du-Pape. He must have poured his heart (and his wallet) into researching this book. Fortunately, it seems like he spent the necessary time organizing the opus so that it is also approachable. Also, he made the right decision to include great photography, which always makes the book easier to approach. This book is heavy -- you won't be able to bring it to France with you... which is the biggest downside. You'll have to do your research before you go. I think it is also really targeted at the person who already is interested in Châteauneuf-du-Pape -- it's too in-depth and focused for most people.
Bordeaux Wine Enthusiasts
Warning! You will likely tap into some of your special Chateauneuf-du-Papes resting in your wine cellar after starting this tome and if not, you will start collecting. I started over 30 years ago and am still going strong!
We spent part of our honeymoon in chateauneuf so the place holds some special fascination for both of us but even if you
"just love the wine" this book is awesome and any wine nerd will be absolutely stoked to have it. I can not really comprehend how much work went into this book, the graphics and pictures are extremely high quality, ever wanted to see wheater profiles from the last decades - here you go... Any detail you could possibly think of remotely related to soil/grape/wine making in this region - here it is.
I am one of those people who is also really interested in the people who make the wine and this book is equally wonderful from that perspective. We had just bought some 07 cdp from places we had not been to before and were now able to check out who the people and their stories were. Huge success as a present.
