This complex murder mystery takes place in Louis XV's 18th Century Paris. A delightful young Inspector Le Floch arrives from the countryside and proves his mettle among a cast of quirky but somehow authentic-feeling characters. The writing (or the translation) was tedious at first, but quickly the characters and the story swept me along on a fun and sometimes even informative ride. And the best thing is that there are sequels, so I don't have to say good-bye to the charming Nicholas Le Floch or his intriguing friends and royal connections.

I read the original French version which is excellent. Out of curiosity, I bought the English translation. Not so good. Actually, it's really bland and dry as it conveys very little of the warmth and fun that you find in the original. If you get a chance, read it in French (BTW, it's called "L'Enigme des Blancs-Manteaux" so don't look for an Apprenti du Chatelet!)

wonderful book of France in 1761 and a new young detective Nicolas Le Floch. Captures the period perfectly and a good tale to go along. When will the next one be translated into English?

I discovered Nicolas Le Floch through a great TV series, and was looking for the french version. The characters are wonderful, with their french flair and the plot is unforgettable; regrettably looses the charm and richness of the dialogues in the translation. But is still a great read...

Parot specializes in writing about France before the Revolution. He shows the reader how events were tied together and impacted people. In this story, a mysterious murder or two or three take place at a time when France is losing the Seven Years War. Also, forensic medicine was in its infancy. I liked how he tied all this together in an entertaining novel.

Just discovered this series. It is translated from French and is a very good read. I really enjoyed it and there were some minor glitches in the translation, where some line would no quite make sense, but this was not a real problem. I will definitely read the other books in the series.

I found the plot challenging , but absorbing. The setting in and around Paris called upon the reader's familiarity with the Paris geography. There were occasional graphic descriptions of disgusting smells and situations that were somewhat overdone, but consistent with the story line. I enjoyed the book and would give it 3.5 stars if that were possible.

One I got sucked in to the character I had to read the rest of the series. I especially enjoy the perspective of Paris and the Monarchy moving towards the Revolution! My only slight complaint is that it was difficult with the Kindle to refer to the cast of characters (especially those with multiple titles) from the front. It is also too bad there is not a map of Paris at the time included. But to me this is a great character with excellent stories.
