First, off, I've looked at most every solution on the market. I had no hard requirements except that I didn't have a ton of room on the bike (not a goldwing) so it would have to fit in a small pouch or in my pocket / on helmet. My dad (rides a goldwing) has some aftermarket product which lets him plug basically any kind of radio/device in so as long as we could find a module for him, it would work for me.

I got my helmet (HJC SY-MAX II) based on the thought that it was chatterbox compatible (as is advertised by both mfgs). I got the helmet first and decided I liked it even without the bluetooth port.

Anyway, I got this thing in and discovered that it doesn't remotetly have any way of working with that port... so get that out of your mind. It has a rubber + metal + screws clamp system that goes between the padding and on the outside of the helmet. It clamps down pretty nice and doesn't appear to do much damage to the helmet. It's sturdy enough that I can slide the X1 on and off (which is a little more difficult than its made out -- I wouldn't really try it with the helmet still on my face) without it jiggling around. The X1 locks in place with a little release clip, so I don't worry that it's going to come off.

It's a little bulky but for a walkie talkie all integrated into my helmet, it's not bad. I haven't noticed a weight difference yet...but I haven't taken it on any 10 hour days yet.

There appears to be no way to turn off the GMRS radio. The way that it works is you set your channel, you connect your bluetooth/aux devices, it plays their audio, and whenever the radio picks up a signal, it'll duck the other audio in favor of the radio noise. This is nice when you're riding with your buddies, but trying to listen to some tunes in a city...

Scala rider? UCLEAR? Any other? Not for me. With all those you are limited in the number of other riders you can talk to simultaneously, as little as only one other person on some, and that is assuming that you all have the same brand of chat device and spent the time pairing them up BEFORE you got on the road. With the Chatter Box X1 Slim you can talk to anyone that has a X1 or walkie talkie as that is how it's voice chat functions. You don't have to pair it with anyone just get on the same channel and you are good to go. In addition, you have 38 talk group settings on each channel if you don't want to hear people not in your group who are using the same channel you are. Please note if you are communicating with an older walkie talkie that does not have the talk group feature, they will hear you but you will not hear them unless you leave your talk group set to 00. New walkie talkies have this feature. I was traveling last weekend and needed to communicate with car riders in 2 automobiles from my motorcycle. Each car had a walkie talkie set to the channel and talk group I set my X1 to and bam, we were talking with no noise from other radio users on that channel. The Bluetooth feature is easy to use. Had my ipod and cell phone paired in 5 mins and had no trouble on the road with either. I only used the PTT for communicating so I cant give feedback on the VOX function. The car riders said that they heard me very clearly at speeds of 65+mph. I have the X1 installed on a 3/4 helmet using the boom-mic. I do have a windshield on my bike but I have pretty loud pipes which the car riders said they never heard nor did my Dad who I talked with on phone via Bluetooth from the X1. The X1 also has FM Radio and 10 presets for you to save your favorite stations to. The volume is great. Volume range is 1-7.Read more ›

The Chatterbox X1 Slim is awesome. However, there are a couple issues that aren't deal breakers, but should be thought about.

The speakers they come with are horrible. Get yourself better speakers and you're golden. I ended up getting the 3.5mm adapter and Tork X-Pro speakers and it's amazing!

If you plan on using the bluetooth feature with your phone and listening to music, do not have the VOX sensitivity high. If you turn the dial, you will get interference every few seconds and your music will pause and you'll hear beeping ever so often. To fix this problem, barely turn the dial to "on" and you'll be fine. I figured this out after doing some research and my music is no longer interrupted by beeping or interference. It's better to use the PTT anyways instead of raising the VOX sensitivity.

Overall, great product. Just replace the speakers and don't turn up the VOX sensitivity.

The Communicator is a good product; however the instructions for attaching to the helmet were less then stellar. Chatterbox should consider that not everyone just knows how to attach to the helmet. The Chatterbox web site was not at all helpful for support.
I would recommend this product, but with caution on how to attach the system.

the buttons can get confusing with gloves on, but you get used to that. the voice activation can be touchy, but once that's set, it is a very cool feature. my biggest complaint are the headphones. wish they were higher quality, but it probably has something to do with the power output of the Chatterbox not being strong enough to push a better quality speaker. (lacks bass when listening to music) I'm seriously considering testing out that theory with some higher quality speakers.
