I got my helmet (HJC SY-MAX II) based on the thought that it was chatterbox compatible (as is advertised by both mfgs). I got the helmet first and decided I liked it even without the bluetooth port.
Anyway, I got this thing in and discovered that it doesn't remotetly have any way of working with that port... so get that out of your mind. It has a rubber + metal + screws clamp system that goes between the padding and on the outside of the helmet. It clamps down pretty nice and doesn't appear to do much damage to the helmet. It's sturdy enough that I can slide the X1 on and off (which is a little more difficult than its made out -- I wouldn't really try it with the helmet still on my face) without it jiggling around. The X1 locks in place with a little release clip, so I don't worry that it's going to come off.
It's a little bulky but for a walkie talkie all integrated into my helmet, it's not bad. I haven't noticed a weight difference yet...but I haven't taken it on any 10 hour days yet.
There appears to be no way to turn off the GMRS radio. The way that it works is you set your channel, you connect your bluetooth/aux devices, it plays their audio, and whenever the radio picks up a signal, it'll duck the other audio in favor of the radio noise. This is nice when you're riding with your buddies, but trying to listen to some tunes in a city...Read more ›
The speakers they come with are horrible. Get yourself better speakers and you're golden. I ended up getting the 3.5mm adapter and Tork X-Pro speakers and it's amazing!
If you plan on using the bluetooth feature with your phone and listening to music, do not have the VOX sensitivity high. If you turn the dial, you will get interference every few seconds and your music will pause and you'll hear beeping ever so often. To fix this problem, barely turn the dial to "on" and you'll be fine. I figured this out after doing some research and my music is no longer interrupted by beeping or interference. It's better to use the PTT anyways instead of raising the VOX sensitivity.
Overall, great product. Just replace the speakers and don't turn up the VOX sensitivity.
I would recommend this product, but with caution on how to attach the system.
