South America's oldest complex society arose during the first millennium BC in the mountains at Chavin de Huántar, and the Chavin style was to dominate Peruvian art and architecture for hundreds of years and influence all that came after. In the first detailed up-to-date treatment of Chavin, Professor Burger pays special attention to the unique character of early Andean civilization and the distinctive processes responsible for its development, arguing that Chavin civilization represents a synthesis of earlier traditions, forged through the impact of long-distance trade and a new religious ideology.

A must-add for the building of a good, basic Archaeo-Anthro library of the Americas
Reviewed in the United States on August 4, 2017
I would advise having a minimal background in the civilization of Chavin and the archaeology of the area, which this book partly assumes, then reading it will be a far more profound experience (especially the work of Dr. Urton of Harvard U.). A must-add for the building of a good, basic Archaeo-Anthro library of the Americas. FYI: University students enrolled in Pre-Historic Art of the Americas should read this book first.

I am doing research for a Young Adult mystery set on an archaeological site in northern Peru during the Cupisnique/Chavin period. Since almost every site I went to on the internet referenced Richard Burger, I ordered the book, which I found both comprehensive and comprehensible to the layman. The book is, of course, scholarly, but it is lucidly and beautifully written. I am not certain that books like this are meant to be page turners, but for me, it was.

Incredible resource.

There aren't a lot of non-specialist friendly books out there on early Andean civilization. This one is excellent, but it's now badly out of date (e.g. what's been learned from Norte Chico sites like Chavin and Huaricanga). A 2nd edition would be a blessing.
A minor complaint: it's a physically beautiful book, but unwieldy in size. That, combined with endnotes in minuscule type, makes a needless chore out of reading it.

If knowing the early part of Peruvian History is your goal This book is Great...
Much that went before Chavin is glossed over quickly in general histories to get to the other significant cultures like Moche, Nasca and Wari...and of course Inca...
This book opens up the Pre-Chavin and Chavin Culture which is the foundation for all the others...Early sites are discussed and their relation to Chavin explored...Lots of photos and graphics to aid in visualizing the sites...
If Peru's foundation culture is the weakest part of your knowledge Peruvian History This book will fill in that gap...

This book is a very good overview of what the Chavin culture is and what the scientists can explain about its origin, its growth and its fall. All the theories, hypothesis and research processes are detailed by one of the greatest specialists of that pre-hispanic civilisation of the ancient Peru : how the more ancient civilisations could have influenced the Chavin birth, and what more known civilisations as Nazca, Huari or Inca, have taken from the Chavin culture. Furthermore, this book can be read easily by everyone.

A good overview containing a sound grasp of the environmental factors that influenced these civilizations, and the limitations of that influence upon the diversity that flowered therein
