“It is depressing to consider how many people will go to bed tonight never having thought of how God wanted them to spend the day. As Craig points out, this is a deadly cycle that quickly culminates in a wasted life. Chazown reminds us of the brilliance of our God who carefully created us and empowered us for a life of purpose. I pray it rescues many from an eternity of regret and leads them toward the satisfying and meaningful life God intended.”

Psalm 139:14 says, “I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well.” (NIV) We are made in God’s image, we are one of kind, there is no one else like us. We each have a purpose, a plan that is ours to carry out, God has trusted us with it. Sometimes we are uncertain of those plans. Chazown will help you to understand that plan for our lives.
Pastor Craig Groeschel provides for us step by step instructions to uncover our chazown, there is personal stories that show these principles at work, there is also “You’re the Author” activities, along with “Key Thoughts” that capture and make it easy to remember crucial concepts and a study guide that can be used individually or with a small group.
Overall, this is a great book, a real eye opener to me. It has helped me to see the purpose for my life.
I received a copy of this book for free, a favorable review was not required, all opinions expressed are my own.
Chazown: Discover and Pursue God's Purpose for Your Life is newly revised in this 2017 edition. I haven't seen the first edition of this book, but I can tell you that this book is FULL of information! Just paging through, I knew I would be gaining a lot of information. With diagrams and pictures, Groeschel explains the finer points of Chazown clearly and concisely.
Chazown basically is the Hebrew word for vision. It's what leads and directs your life. Think of it like a gift from God!
One of the things I've felt desperate for here on the blog lately is some vision. To be honest, I got lost in the sea of book reviews and lost my purpose. This book landed in my lap at the best moment possible. As I gear up for a little mini-break, I'm taking all I've learned in Chazown and putting it into practice as I figure out what's next!
First, Groeschel begins the book by reminding us that when we are working out of our Chazown, we are actually given 4 gifts that keep us going. We are given focus, endurance, peace, and a passion. I know I'm not the only one wishing for a little bit more of that in my life!
You will move through finding your vision by examining your core values, spiritual gifts, and past experiences you will take a journey to figure out what you've been uniquely designed to do. Then, you are shown how to name your Chazown and put it into action. Finally, Groeschel breaks down the parts that make of Chazown. As you look to small areas of your life to pour into, you are able to do something big. Lastly, Groeschel reminds us that we cannot do any of this alone! Your community is so important. Perhaps why a couple of the last books I've read have been about friendship! (Never Unfriended and Messy Beautiful Friendship.)
If you're not sure what's next in life, this is the book for you! If you're feeling adrift like me, this is definitely the next step for you. Take some time to learn. To pour into yourself. Find your vision. To gain that focus, endurance, peace and passion you need to continue on.
I received a copy of this book from Blogging For Books. This review is my own, honest opinion.
Chazown is not a long book, and it is composed of several very short chapters, giving the book a quick, fun, effervescent feel. Groeschel’s light-hearted and approachable writing style only adds to this particular pathos. He comes across as a trustworthy guide, and when dealing with topics as touchy as life-direction and identity, this is probably a good thing.
Groeschel points out that every person’s chazown is discovered where their core values, spiritual gifts, and experiences overlap. He then turns his attention to the practical: how do you live out your chazown? Five “spokes” are identified that need to be in place for successful living of a chazown. These are areas where we must “succeed small in order to succeed big.” The five spokes are: relationship with God, relationships with people, finances, health and fitness, and work.
Chazown succeeds as a self-help book in two ways. First, it isn’t really a self-help book as much as a call to draw near to God and listen closely in order to find life purpose. Unfortunately, this activity is foreign to many believers and many live aimless lives as a result. Second, Groeschel is able to be systematic and comprehensive without coming across as constrictive and clinical. His outline for discovery and execution leaves room for people to “move around” as they work to discover their unique design.
I think this book works best as a focused call-to-action. Groeschel’s purpose is to get the reader moving and working for the expansion of the Kingdom of God. But he isn’t content just to call the reader to action; he wants movement with purpose and direction. I recommend this book for any and all who have yet to find their “sweet spot” in the Kingdom. Read this book, and go find your chazown.
