The second installment from the nutty case files of Jack Dixon finds Jack lightening up with friends as he prepares for his favorite meal of the year, the Friendsgiving feast. It's an overdue moment of happiness for Jack, still reeling from the fallout of his last big case, which pitted him against a secretive prep school, humorless corporate thugs, and a Nordic biker gang with a thing for big knives, but also brought him his two new loves; a lady with a quick wit and a motorcycle that's growing on him. The autumnal feasting and fun can't last, however, as the lure of a lengthy but lucrative investigation, on tour with an old college wrestling teammate turned pro, proves too much for Jack and his employer to resist. Caught in the mixed-up world of professional wrestling and personal politics, Jack is forced to navigate the perils of being on the road with old friends and new enemies, and trying to figure out if maybe it's the other way around, while dodging punches, bullets, Denny's cheeseburgers and the constant animosity of a traveling circus of wrestlers, roadies, security guards, and executives reluctant to have an investigator in their midst, and with good reason. Jack's got a lot to untangle...and there's also the case to solve.

Action scenes are well-written, and it’s clear the author knows how to visualize and accurately describe a real fight. The most interesting aspect for me was the setting, which serves to heighten the tension at times, as well as provide some moments of truly witty banter. All-in-all, really entertaining and highly recommended.

A Protein-Packed Sequel

Ford’s second entry in the Jack Dixon series is in a leisurely jaunt of a PI novel, with plenty of road for the acerbic narrator to ride along as he confronts the thousand cuts of his life as a private investigator and the shadows of his own bruised outlook. Never quite straying into the professional misanthropy of some detective protagonists, Ford’s Dixon is a charmingly self-aware guy, and the novel’s more intimate moments are handled with the same deftness as the brisk action sequences which will be familiar to readers of Ford’s other work. While the standout feature of the novel has to be the dialogue, which is at times so snappy and well-realized as to beg for some kind of film adaptation, anyone familiar with the world of professional wrestling should also get a kick out of the hall of mirrors setting in which Jack reluctantly finds himself. If the novel does have one flaw, the plotting does feel a bit light in the first half, with less tension than fans of harder-hitting mysteries will be accustomed to. That said, the latter half progresses at a lively clip and leaves with a satisfying punch — I’m certainly looking forward to the next one.
