Each make the choice to explore a relationship outside their marriage, to find emotional or physical fulfillment. Heather is married to someone who places their individual achievements far above the needs and wants of his family. Victoria is married to her high school sweetheart and though she tries to stay connected, there is no doubt that they have matured into very different people over the past thirty years. Catherine's marriage problems stem from her past and her inability to cope with normal intimacy.
Ms. Ardigo takes us on a journey where we explore the inner workings of these women's minds and hearts and the value they place on family and love. In the end each woman comes to their own conclusions about how the future unfolds, and it is the honesty within their circle of friendship that helps them rescue themselves.
A truly well-crafted and emotionally conceived book that encourages us not to judge but to try to understand.
I loved Heather’s kick-ass personality, and Catherine’s transformation was sensational. I also enjoyed Victoria, the oldest of the co-worker’s, story. Marrying your high school sweetheart and thirty years later realizing you’re in a loveless marriage, is heartbreaking. I’m sure many women have experienced at least one of these portrayals, and that’s what makes this book feel so real. This novel is perfect for anyone looking for a mature read. There is plenty of humor in it, too! I laughed out loud quite a few times. Great read, and great for a friend.
The issues and resolutions for all three women are quite different. We have Heather who just plain married the wrong man from the beginning. We find out that every five years she runs into the man she should've married--and no, he's not the one she cheats with. Then there's Victoria who is at the thirty year mark for her marriage. She and her husband have changed, drifted apart--a potential issue in any long-term relationship. She's progressed in life, matured, and he's remained in the past, basically unchanged from high school. Finally, we have Catherine who is the youngest in the story with three young children and a husband that doesn't seem to understand her--but we find she doesn't even understand herself, so how can he?
The scene that tugged the hardest at my emotions was near the end when we really hear Catherine's husband speak from the heart. Peter paints the picture of their relationship from his vantage point, starting with when they first met many years earlier, still remembering what she was wearing that night, and progressing to the present where they seem to have lost each other somewhere along the way. His words rang true, felt real, and made me like him, made me empathize with him and hope that they could work out their issues and move forward--together.
Don't let the title fool you. Cheating to Survive does not glamorize infidelity. Rather, it explores how these three women have gotten to the point in their lives and marriages where cheating seems like a viable option. Let's face it, like it or not, there's a lot of infidelity in the real world. And I think the author did a fantastic job of exploring the reasons for it, and the fall out from it, for Heather, Victoria, and Catherine.
Well done, Christine Ardigo!
