The late, great Barbara Cook was 83 years old in this concert. She'd just received a Tony nomination for Sondheim on Sondheim, 52 years after she won a Tony for The Music Man. If you don't have her CDs, buy them all - I recommend The London Album as a start. That said - this CD with Michael Feinstein features clever and poignant duets, arranged specifically for the two of them.... which they deliver with impeccable musicianship, a natural reparte and great ease. No, Barbara Cook did not have the range at 83 that she had in years past... but she had a vast amount of life experience to infuse every word and every note... and she sang another 5 years after this concert. Barbara Cook was and will remain a treasure.

This is a one-of-a-kind recording for fans of either Michael Feinstein or Barbara Cook, and for those who are fans of both (That's me!), it is pure heaven! Wish I had been there at Feinstein's at the Regency to experience the show!!
My only quibble with the CD, and it is a small one, is that I'd have preferred to hear the patter between songs if this is meant to document a full cabaret show. But I know that many people don't like that, just wanting the songs. Indeed the whole 'live' aspect of the recording is downplayed here since, again, many find applause intrusive. So, there is very little applause recorded, so therefore, it will not distract from the music.
Definitely a MUST HAVE for the lovers of cabaret music and the Great American Songbook! And of course the amazing Barbara Cook and Michael Feinstein!!

What can one say about the genius of Barbara Cook that hasn't already been said. Here, in a concert recorded just a few years ago, she joins forces musically with the wonderful Michael Feinstein, and the results are magical. Treasures from the classic American songbook are interwoven with a few surprising choices, and you really feel like you are a member of the audience at the New York nightclub where this was recorded. Paraphrasing another famous song, it's "Merely Marvelous".

Although here are two of the best names in the music business, unfortunately, their real talents didn't come across. It's as if they were repressing their usual sparkling energies. Besides, the sound was tinny and didn't pick up their voices very well. Maybe it was because the CD was recorded in the Feinstein Lounge at the Regency Hotel but that shouldn't have affected the acoustics or did it?
They didn't need to praise each other at the end. They're too well-known and respected so this was pretentious.

Like both of em. Have great respect for Michael Feinsteins work cataloguing the American songbook and his pleasant voice. His best CD is still "Isn't It Romantic," for my money. Barbara Cook's career is a marvel; saw her quite a while back live at Colden Center of Queens College. So impressed with the way she was able to connect to that large audience as though it were a small cabaret venue. Still remember her renditions of "Nothin Could be Finer..." and "I Love a Piano." But unfortunately, here, neither Feinstein or Cook are at the top of their game. Her voice was a little ragged and harsh for me, and his choice of songs did not showcase his range. Best numbers on the CD for me were "Cheek to Cheek" and "Give Me the Simple Life."

A great pairing of two great singers.I wish they had sung more duets on the cd. Barbara's performance is stella as always, I am so glad she included "where do you start", a favorite of mine that I first heard Rosemary Clooney sing. I wonder if they recorded a video if so I would certainly purchase it.

Cook and Feinstein clearly enjoyed making this c.d., and you will enjoy the warm informality they bring to it. It pairs two fine professionals, one more seasoned than the other it is true, who play off each other with pleasure.

Missing the magic
Reviewed in Canada on September 16, 2011
I adore both Cook and Feinstein. In fact, until now, I have treasured every CD either has recorded. But this is like listening to a couple of loveable relatives sitting around the piano and tossing off some oldies without much thought. I may listen to it once again, in about ten years, but there isn't a single moment of magic to make me take the disc out, and play it anticipating at least one glorious moment. I'd love to recommend it, but I'm afraid my nose would grow far too long if I were to even praise it slightly. Pity.
