With regards to the performance, I am an old guy and I am not into the Lady Gaga thing with all the crazy clothes and what I previously thought was just a clever creation of some highly paid PR folks. While the PR stuff is probably, to some extent, true I was surprised and amazed how well The Lady can sing traditional pop and jazz. While her upper register is a little compromised, as is Tony's at this stage in his career, she can really sing...She has to be taken as a serious artist. I think of this peculiar combination mush in the way somebody described the relationship between Fred Astaire and Ginger Rodgers. "He gave her class and she gave him sex appeal." In this case "sex appeal" might not be appropriate for an 88 Y.O octogenarian, but they both kind of added a bit to the others shortcomings with the net result being that the sum is greater than the parts.
The songs were great...many wonderful standards and some great songs that I was not at all familiar. The disc was a combination of solos and duets. I knew that Tony could sing the hell out of these songs, but Gaga was a total surprise. She is a real artist and her taste in clothes, at least on this occasion, was great. The back up band was also first rate.
All in all, if you like tradition pop songs, this is a highly entertaining disc.
With the modern singers (Taylor Swift, Miley Cyrus, Justin Beiber, et. al.) could they stand on stage alone and put a song over? One doubts that without their techno-mechno support, they wouldn't know what to do.
And the standards from the Great American Songbook are well represented.
Tony Bennett is near ninety, and it shows; he is unable to reach some notes, and at times resorts to shouting. But his performance even at this age, and more times than not, is stupendous.
They make a great comedy duet as well as singing duet. He plays straight-man to her sexy vamping in suggestive and gorgeous gowns.
The crowd at Jazz at Lincoln Center's Rose Theater seemed to really enjoy themselves.
For Tony Bennett fans, this DVD is a must-have. For Lady Gaga fans, if you only know her from her pop songs and outrageous antics, you are in for a real treat.
I agree with what Tony said in a recent interview: why Lady Gaga wastes her time with contemporary pop songs, when she has such great jazz chops, is beyond me. Maybe Stefani Joanne Angelina Germanotta has finally grown up. If only Miley Cyrus, Katy Perry, and Ariana Grande could...
