After thoroughly investigating (or so she thought) this handsome earl, she sets a plan in motion to meet him: sure on their acquaintance he will see that they are well-matched. Completely unsuited to deception or discovering possible consequences, Elinor’s sabotaging of her carriage results in an accident that totaled the carriage, shattered a kitchen wall and left her and the driver bruised but not badly injured.
And the kitchen she totaled belonged to the earl of her dreams, who is hosting his annual 12 day bacchanalia with other rakes of his ilk, several lightskirts and a healthy dollop of pleasures of the flesh. Grantham is intrigued by Elinor, and finds her quite a refreshing female, and far more pleasant company than the old and jaded friends he entertains.
With several twists, the story is light and entertaining, with enough miscommunication and missed signals and several moments of justifiable anger or embarrassment the story trips lightly to conclusion leaving plenty of room for amusement. Utterly appealing and standing alone without a great deal of difficulty, Elinor is merely headstrong and hopeful, not truly naughty, but delightfully naïve and open in her approach and honest assessment of her own situation and her reasons for appearing so abruptly.
This is a truly clever series that is well grounded in both the historical accuracy and the cleverly wrought characters. I’ve read the first two (I need to get the third full length) and truly enjoyed each one.
I received an eArc copy of the title from the publisher via NetGalley for purpose of honest review. I was not compensated for this review: all conclusions are my own responsibility.
This is the first time I've read anything by Emma Locke, I enjoy reading a novella from an author first to see how I enjoy their writing. And the writing style was one of the best things about the book, it was light, witty and entertaining. Exactly what I was in the mood for!
Miss Elinor Conley is desperate. There are no eligible bachelors in her village and with the threat of spinsterhood looming in front of her, she makes a rather rash decision to convince an Earl she has never met that they would be a perfect match. She sees Grantham, Earl Chelford, at her brother's smithy and decides that they're meant to be and concocts a scheme to meet him so that he can see that. Because there's no flaws in that plan.
Elinor is actually a very likable heroine. She is naive and sheltered, and more than a little silly, to begin with. But she's good-hearted and once she gets a serious reality check, she's a bit more sensible.
I liked Grantham, he has some hidden qualities and buries the pain from the loss of his family in bad behaviour at Christmas- something Elinor stumbles upon. He doesn't really stand out for me, as a hero, though.
This is a sweet novella, especially with Christmas so close! It's a great length and easily held my interest. I just wish there had been a little more. It felt like it needed another chapter, or an epilogue to round out Elinor and Grantham's romance- it just felt like their relationship was a little unfinished.
Apart from that, a great introduction to the Naughty Girls series, and I'll be playing catch up with the series very soon.
*I received a review copy from the publisher, via NetGalley, for my honest review. Thank you!
Miss Elinor Conley is a little worried about getting a husband. It is apparent there is no one suitable in her small town. But when Grantham Wendell, the Earl of Chelford, wanders into her brother's smithy, she realizes she has found her man. Mmmm....It will take some careful planning. Elinor concocts a plan worthy of an inexperienced girl. She convinces her family that her aunt is ill and needs her. Fortunately, her aunt lives not too far from Grantham's winter residence. She plans a convenient accident. Grantham, she is sure, will fall in love with her in just a few days when he sees how well they suit. Things go wrong from the beginning. Very wrong. But surprisingly, some things go right.
I enjoyed this book very much. I will look for more from this author.
I received a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
