I am pleased that many of her books are being reissued, some in both eBook and Paperback format and some in eBook only. it would be nice indeed of all could be made available in both formats. When I first purchased the Kindle book of Cheerfulness Breaks In, the wrong book was delivered, but after filing a complaint with Amazon the problem was corrected.
And Cheerfulness Breaks In is the first of Thirkell's novels to be written (and set) during WWII. I think that her WWII novels are the ones I appreciate the most. Their insights about live on the "home front" are very interesting. And Thirkell was writing these books while the war was taking place, when the outcome wasn't yet known. That gives the social history added impact.
Highly recommended.

Lydia Keith is trying to hold everything together at home as well as doing more than her fair share of voluntary work. Everyone is battling with the black out and the problems of food rationing and petrol rationing but somehow they retain their sense of humour and carry on as usual for at least the majority of the time.
This is an entertaining and amusing read as well as being poignant at times. Because it was written at the time it really does show how World War II affected a certain section of society and how they responded to the many challenges involved.

As always, with Angela Thirkell, there are fascinating insights into the social realities of the times, and this book contains details about the Home Front and the work of the voluntary services( particularly women) in the countryside which I have never read anywhere before.
Humour is always a feature of Thirkell's books and she is masterful and skilled in her descriptions of situations and people. In her own way, she is as sharp and sly as a modern Austen, and many passages could have come from the pen of Trollope, particularly the delicious hints of the continuous in-fighting between High and Low clergy.

This is still the wrong book. When will Amazon finally be able to deliver the title I want!
Further wrong book on 25 May. Although the "look inside" showed an extract from "Cheerfulness Breaks In", when I came to look in the book which was delivered, it was still the wrong text.
If it was possible to give negative stars to Amazon in this instance, I would be strongly tempted to do so!
WHEN WIILL THEY GET THEIR ACT TOGETHER?
Further attempt on 17 June, and still the wrong book. THIS IS GETTING BEYOND A JOKE.
