Not Many Folks Know this but…
Buying cheesecloth is not like buying sheets – the higher the number doesn’t mean the better the cloth. Very high thread count cloths like Grade 90 are delicate and fragile. Great for wiping baby’s face and taking off makeup but not great in your hard-working kitchen.
We could put you to sleep talking about warp and weft and yarn size but trust us – we tested hundreds of cloths before selecting the perfect one for culinary use. Our cheesecloth has a yarn size and thread count that delivers great straining, cutting, cleaning, and durability.
Who is Country Trading Co.?
We are a small family business, and we know one end of a kitchen from the other. We make everything from scratch and back in 2012, we started developing a culinary-grade organic cheesecloth to take the strain. One that we could cut and wash without it disintegrating.
At home in our kitchen, we make cheese and yogurt, brew beer, kombucha, and ferment vegetables, cure bacon, make jams and jellies. This is a fantastic quality cloth that does the job. We really hope you enjoy using it and reusing it in your kitchens as much as we do. We pack it in a plastic-free cardboard box with some of our favorite recipes printed inside.
This large 1.5m x 1.0m Certified Organic Cheesecloth is Perfect for:
- Draining cheese curd
- Filtering bone broth
- Straining nut milk
- Making Greek yogurt
- Filtering Cold Brew Coffee
- Fruit jellies and preserves
- Kombucha and Craft Beer
- Straining Vegetable Juice
- Steeping hops for beer
- Making spice bags
- Squeezing lemons
.... we could go on - we're still learning new things our customers use this cloth for.
Where does this cheesecloth end up? Not in land fill
When it gets a bit tired after many uses in the kitchen, we move it to the garden basket for use as a seed saving and seed sorting cloth. We also use it in the workshop and garage for cleaning and polishing. When we're finally finished with it, we compost it.

Very Thick, Great Quality, Needs lots of initial washing

There was a problem filtering reviews right now. Please try again later.
The thickness & sturdiness is nice for most applications. It is easier to clean after using it to contain herbs & broth veggies when making chicken soup, than the double layer of regular (good quality) cheesecloth I had been using previously. There is only one layer of this to deal with, and being so thick it is easy to rinse/scrub stuff off. It also does work well in a single layer for “dripping” yogurt, with a weight on top, to make “Greek yogurt” or labneh (kinda like a cream cheese.) Being much thicker, it does add bulk/stiffness to the fabric. It’s fairly workable when wet, but not *super* pliable & super easy to wring, like regular cheesecloth. But I manage this okay, even with my hands that have pain. It seems much more stiff and bulky when it comes in the package, but it softens up nicely when it gets wet.
The thing I’m not thrilled about, is this took much more effort to clean before initial use, than my other unbleached organic cotton cheesecloths had. All of them get initial washing/boiling till the water runs clear, but most release a reasonable amount of yellow into the water from the cotton & then the rinse water comes clean fairly quickly. This one turned the water very dirty and cloudy, and took me more than one day of boiling it in new fresh batches of water, agitating and wringing as I rinsed by hand in between boiling sessions; then doing it all again. And Again. It took forever before I was getting rinse water that looked reasonably clear. The pictures are after I had boiled & then rinsed the cloth *several times* already, after initially receiving it. Eventually I did get it to come mostly clear.
I hope the company looks into this, as it sounds like other customers have had similar issues with it releasing lots of gunk into the water initially, and it also sounds like this is not what they expect for their product, by what they’ve responded to in people’s questions. I would hate for someone to use this straight out of the package for preparing food, because it was billed as being ready for use, and end up with that gunk in their food.
All that said, the thickness & quality of the cheesecloth is truly nice & not something I’ve found elsewhere. I also appreciate that this seems responsibly produced. I appreciate the GOTS certification, and that they seem to be doing their best to offer an ethically produced product. They also seem to be a small business that puts a lot of effort & care into their products & customer service, answering questions, etc.
It’s worth it…just make sure you wash it well, first!
For the company’s reference, my order was in August of 2021.

I read many reviews/descriptions and while I was tempted to just buy the cheapest, I elected to get this product. What sold me was this comment in the product description:
"What is so special about this Cheesecloth?
It is certified organic cotton, which means we can trace it from the farm to the mill to you without any pesticides or chemicals. It is a dream to use in the kitchen and to clean, whatever you’ve strained just washes off. Stronger and more durable than Grade 90 baby muslin, you can wash and reuse it many times. The generous 18 sq yards can be cut and used single thickness for fine straining."
This is so much better than the cheaper cheesecloth I'd purchased previously. I could not get over the difference in the weight and weave of this product versus what I'd bought at the large retail store.
While it may cost more, if you are using for serious cooking I definitely recommend paying a little extra. You will not be disappointed.

The cloth is superb. Much better than lint free blue shop cloth. The cheese cloth is less absorbent of the canouba polish which means when I charge the cloth to apply, I get more of the paste on the tool surface and I'm wasting less wax getting just absorbed into the cloth.
This is for tool surfaces such as table saw tops, band saw table and hand plane soles. When I go to buff it off the loose weave nature of the cheese cloth means it doesn't heat up. This is important as I want to buff the wax not melt it so much that it basically gets removed during buffing. I'm getting better surface finish on each coat and better protection and smoother use of the tool.
When it comes to using cabinet makers paste wax on wood I use #0000 grade steel wool so I don't use it for applying the wax only for buffing.
The same outcome is true when buffing the wood. The paste wax is not getting heated up too much and removed. It is getting buffed properly to a satin sheen for paste wax. Each subsequent coat looks better and better and I can only put it down to the cheese cloth. The only change I've made.
The cloths I wouldn't normally clean them straight away as I reuse them again and again by putting them in labelled zip lock bags. One for each type of polished but I just gave one a quick clean to test it and it cleaned up great without falling apart.
Being unbleached and made without chemicals is important as I use only food safe and chemical free finishes not just the paste wax. So I'm not worried about introducing a chemical to my finish accidentally by using these. Some of the things I make are in contact with food ie chopping boards, serving platters, tables and some are not ie furniture, shelving etc but I want them still to be food safe because ... well kids lick stuff. I also don't want there to be anything that could react poorly with the finish.
Overall I'm very happy with these for my specific usage and happily recommend this product from this brand/manufacturer. They also come beautifully boxed in recycled cardboard box which is environmentally so important. For me this is a big thing. I source my wood from sustainable sources. Most of it from a timber merchant who only uses sustainable plantation timber and storm fallen trees and trees that councils have deemed unsafe or an introduced species that are to be felled for environmental concerns. So I'll definitely be only using this product for my wood finish from here on.
