About the Author
William F. Roberts, Jr., known to all as “Bill”, was born in 1927 in Maryville, Tennessee, and grew up on a farm during the Depression. He had one brother, and four sisters. In 1945, after graduation from Maryville High School, he enlisted in the United States Marine Corps. After Boot Camp at Parris Island, South Carolina, Bill was sent to Camp Pendleton California, where a division was being formed for the invasion of the Japanese home islands. But before the division could ship overseas, the Atomic bombs were dropped on Nagasaki and Hiroshima, ending the war. With the end of the war over two million men and women began looking for jobs. Dad was fortunate to find work on the shipping dock of Byron Jackson Oil Tools in Los Angeles. For the next 40 years he continued with BJ and rose through the ranks to salesman, district manager, division manager, international managing director for Europe and the Middle East, vice president and eventually president of BJ-Hughes, a combination of Byron Jackson and Hughes Tool Company. By the time he retired he and his family had lived in Tulsa, Oklahoma, and Holland. He and his wife Bette later lived in London, England and finally Houston, Texas, the company headquarters. During their travels Dad, who loved to cook and experiment in the kitchen, had picked up and collected many wonderful recipes, including those he learned at two French Gourmet Cooking Schools in Provence, France. This cook book is the collection that was gathered over a 30 plus year period from countries all over the world. This book was originally written by Dad, who passed on in August, 2001. Since then other family members have added a few favorite recipes.
