THIS most recent one? I could cry at the deterioration in quality. What's up with the cost savings on manufacturing? They ruined a previously great product. THIS one has thin metal prongs that bend and deform with tougher supermarket strawberries, and a cheap spring system that doesn't allow that prongs to open wide enough to be useful on the big berries. Until the manufacturer takes quality-control seriously, don't waste your money on this cheap, useless version.
But I was surprised, it is actually quite useful.
(1) It saves a lot (!) of time when preparing strawberries.
(2) It takes up almost no space.
(3) You can put it in the dishwasher to clean it.
(4) We have had it for four years now, and it's still as good as new.
I guess I figured the teeth would be open in resting position, and then when you push the button, they close to form a cone. Such that you put the berry against it, push the button and it does the job for you.
Instead... You push the button, the unsharpened teeth open up, you have to jam and twist to loosen the hull, then you rely on the weak spring inside to close the teeth and "pull" the hull out for you.
Not worth the money. Save yourself the frustration and use a grapefruit spoon.
The Bottom Line: This little tool is a mighty help if you process a lot of berries. It's so much faster and safer than a paring knife. I highly recommend it.

This has been great for hulling a load of strawberries for making jam.
The two big let downs are; the small green 'pink at the bottom keeps falling out as I use it, which is so difficult to put back in, and you can't provide additional 'clasping' strength if you have a tougher strawberry.
Definitely worth buying though.
Out of interest I have also bought one of the very cheap copies of the Chef'n StemGem and although it looks very similar it definately has a flimsier, cheaper feel to it, and the blades are looser- it also arrived without a plunger knob- it must have fallen off before being posted as the missing part wasn't in the bag!
You pays your money as they say...
So go on, treat yourself... you’ll be glad you did! (And the reward is a bowl of hulled strawb’s!)
