Knife steels often are touted as sharpening tools. Few actually sharpen but do perform the vital task of realigning, or "resetting," a knife's edge, which bends this way and that when contacting a cutting surface or other hard object. Because this tool's surface contains diamond dust, it's hard enough to somewhat sharpen a blade. Somewhat is key. This won't replace a professional sharpening job, which proceeds from coarse grinding to ever-finer grinding at tightly controlled angles. This steel performs only the final grinding, during which an edge is polished. Thus, properly used it can lengthen intervals between sharpenings better than a steel without diamond dust. The rule of thumb being that a steel should be at least as long as the knife blade being drawn across it, this steel's length is fine for most household knives. Its oval shape exposes more surface to a knife's blade. --Fred Brack

If your good knives are getting dull this steel is the way to go. A few swipes every time you use the knife will bring the edge back. We have a set of chicago cutlery that has been rejuvinated with this steel.

I took a...dull knife and in 1-2 min had it slicing paper with this sharpener. On my good knives 30 seconds to put on a really nice edge. I'm very pleased so far, and expect that this will be less wearing on my knives than using stones. I'll be using this regularly to put on a quick edge while cooking. Highly recommended.

This is an awesome tool. We have had Shun Classic kitchen knives and this sharpener for about six years. This tool keeps them factory sharp for about a year and a half before they need to be sent back to Shun for a factory new re-sharpening. Some reviewers suggested this tool wears out. I disagree. It does need to be cleaned regularly as it will clog with the fine metallic particles generated while sharpening. A little dish washing soap on the back (rough)side of a kitchen sponge works great.

Works great--better than anything else--but plan on buying a new one in a few years. The surface wears out and clogs up--happens with steel sharpeners too. I am on my third of these diamond sharpeners. Worth the money if you cannot stand dull knives--but it will be a recurring expense.

This tool sharpens blades really well and it is sturdy and well made. It's construction is probably better than the Wustoff which it is replacing. The only issue I have with it is that due to it's oblong shape, it is unusually wide. Due to it's unusual width it DOES fit in my knife block, but only if inserted at a very particular angle.

At first the company sent me an 8 inch sharpening steel, however they have since sent me the correct size which was A 10 inch sharpening steel, and they also allowed me to keep the 8 inch sharpening steel which I have since donated to a local food pantry that feeds the homeless in our area. I would definitely order from this company in the future.

It is fairly coarse, and very abrasive. The oval shape works fast. Its not appropriate to compare this to a "typical" steel that's made of steel and has the fine grooves running the length of the tool. These are meant to put an edge on a sharp blade. The diamond unit actually sharpens a duller blade, and, IMO, leaves the edge too rough for immediate use. I had a hand full of neglected knives that the unit sharpened up nicely and quickly, I then stoned them to a finer edge, and finally used a typical steel as a final step.

I would not use the diamond steel on a high end knife like a Henkel's or Shun. It will leave the edge very rough, and it will take much honing to get it back to the smooth fine edge a typical (high end knife) user wants to have.

I added this tool to my travel bag. I travel throughout the year visiting family & friends. When asked to help prepare meals and find a dull knife, a few quick strokes on the sharpening steel makes preparation fun, instead of a struggle.
