Cyclone Dirt Trap Car Wash Bucket Insert
Advanced Geometric Filtering System
297 geometrically-positioned dirt trap cyclones deliver optimal filtration. Maximizing dirt capture and water flow in a wash bucket takes a great deal of engineering. Place too many holes, and the cones become too small to let any dirt particles through. Install too few cones, and the holes end up being big enough to allow particles to flow back up into the clean wash water. The Dirt Trap’s unique Geometric Filtering System strikes the perfect balance between cone size, dirt aperture diameter, funnel pitch, and strategic placement for maximum particle capture. The Dirt Trap is the future of car wash bucket filter technology, and will save car owners from installing billions of tiny swirls and scratches with every car wash.
Uni-Directional Filtration: Keeps Dirt Trapped Under The Filter And Off Your Car
Uni-Directional Filtration keeps dirt trapped under the Dirt Trap Cyclones to reduce scratches, swirls, and paint damage caused during washing. Old world wash screens allow water and dirt to flow through vertically. Whenever a mitt is dunked into the bucket, the downward force pushes water and dirt down past the screen, but it also pushes any settled dirt back up straight into the cleaner water of the bucket. The textured underside and small holes of the Dirt Trap screen act as a one-way valve: dirt is pushed through the cyclone funnels and is trapped underneath the guard where it cannot flow back into the clean water. The Uni-Directional Filtration of the Dirt Trap keeps dirt away from cleaner wash water and off the wash mitt to drastically reduce the chances of installing swirls and scratches on any vehicle during a wash.
Enhanced Scrubbing Action Keeps Wash Mitts Clean
Every Dirt Trap bucket insert is molded with Cyclone Scrub Ridge rings around every dirt cyclone funnel. Rub the wash mitt directly on the Dirt Trap to scrub and agitate any embedded dirt and grime from the wash fibers, then funnel and trap it directly underneath the insert. The Cyclone Scrub Ridges are designed with the perfect grip and height to work with any chenille, microfiber, or natural lambswool car wash mitt, natural car wash sea sponge, or boars hair wash brush. The ridges are gentle on natural and manmade fibers, and will not tear apart or destroy any car wash mitt, sponge, or brush. Knock dirt, dust, grease, and grime off the car wash mitt with the scrubbing ridge, then funnel it directly down underneath the bucket insert to trap it away from the cleaner water in the bucket.
It belongs in your bucket.

How It Works: Cyclone Dirt Trap Technology
Dirt Trap Cyclones funnel and separate dirt away from wash water. The Dirt Trap car wash guard uses nearly 300 cyclone funnels to separate abrasive dirt and debris from car wash water. Keeping the dirt already washed away from the car reduces the chances of installing swirls and scratches caused by scrubbing with abrasive dirt. Traditional car wash strainers use large open screens and vertical fins in an attempt to hold dirt at the bottom of a wash bucket. However, the mere act of dunking the dirty wash mitt in and out of the bucket pushes and pulls any dirt and debris straight up through the screen and back into the clean water. This traps the dirt already washed off the car in the mitt, and causes abrasive scratching action on the next cleaning pass. The small funnels of the Dirt Trap create cyclonic flow down through the tiny tip of each funnel, spinning heavier dirt particles out of the water through intense centripetal force. The textured underside and small holes of the screen act as a one-way valve: dirt is pushed through the funnels with cyclonic force, but it gets trapped underneath the guard and cannot easily flow back up into the water when the wash mitt is withdrawn. Use the Dirt Trap in each wash and rinse bucket to minimize the chances of scratching and swirling paintwork during any car wash or full detail.
- The Dirt Trap car wash bucket insert protects vehicles in more ways than one. Put one Dirt Trap insert in each wash and rinse bucket to trap abrasive dirt and debris away from the cleaner wash water. Stack two Dirt Traps in line to double the cyclonic effect in each funnel and pull more dirt out from the wash water. Rotate one Dirt Trap 90°, then stack to stagger the Dirt Trap Cyclones, trapping dirt particles beneath a more complex route through which it would have to backflow

I tried all three big box stores and a local paint store nearby and a total of 6 buckets and found ZERO that this fits in.
Perhaps the "traditional 12 inch bucket" is a myth.
It basically fits their $15 bucket, but good luck finding a $2 bucket anywhere that will work.
Plus, it likes to float up and essentially releases the dirt from below, mixing it back in with the "clean" water.
Like several other reviewers, I had to cut my dirt trap to get it to fit. I used a flush trim router bit.
Not worth the money IMO.
As I've attempted to use these "upgraded" cyclone traps on standard 5-gallon buckets, I've discovered that the base is too narrow for an appropriate fit.
When water fills standard 5-gallon buckets, the slightly tilted & unsecure dirt traps will break their seal and pop free, making them functionally useless.
I would suggest that you buy the older version of this dirt trap that sells for the same price, is rated much better and works with well with a large array of competitors' 5-gallon buckets.
Chemical Guys unfortunately took options away from the consumer. For that reason and because the complimentary products that this item can work with are limited due to its new specs, I rate the Cyclone Dirt Trap 3-stars.
Biggest problem with the product I recieved was the holes in the cones still have leftover plastic. But not a big problem because all need is a lighter and melt it away.
I really do like this design so, I fixed it to be functional and fit standard buckets. Here is what I did for those DIYers out there:
I used 100 grit sandpaper and an electric sander to take off the outer lip. Essentially, you are sanding just until you flatten the outer side of the first ring of holes. Then, I followed it with 220 grit to make it nice and smooth (Pictured: before & after). It fits perfect now, and is still easy to pull out. Next, for the holes, I used an ice pick to punch out the excess plastic (pictured). Then I used the electric sander with 220 grit to shave off the excess plastic. I did this process for the holes twice to get them completely opened and cleaned. (pictured). Hope this helps!
Another reviewer had good results with trimming so I'll give it a shot. The conical design is obviously superior to a standard grit guard so it was a little annoying that it's made for some specialized bucket, all the while marketed as if it fits standard common 12" buckets.
Dirt trapping design: 5/5
Usability and clear fitment guide: 2/5

However, still traps grit during the wash as it's all sitting there underneath the grit guard, so overall happy with it.
And is this product supposed to arrive warped? Although it sits stable there is a slight rise towards the center. Not a biggie but a bit off-putting. Maybe there is some engineered pupose to this design?
Undecided at this point whether to return this item. It could be an improvement on the standard DIY bokashi using a grit guard (which itself might be an improvement on the bucket with many holes within another bucket - I truly don't know) or it could be useless. Time will tell. For now the Cyclone Dirt Trap is still in its packaging.
