- Reviewed in the United States on May 25, 2016My daughter is going through chemo for the second time. She was 4 and 5 the first time so did not really understand what was going on. This time she is 7 and will be 8 and she has more questions.
This book does a great job of breaking things down to kid friendly terms. At the end of each chapter there is a page when kids can draw pictures or write questions that they have concerning the information in the chapter. (It is set up to where a child can read it or a small child can have it read to them). There are silly jokes and whimsical drawings throughout the book.
The first chapter talk about the parts/systems of the body and how they work when working correctly. It explains what they are and why you need them.
Chapter 2 talks about what cancer is and how anyone any age can get it. It breaks down some of the more common types of cancer. This lets you talk to your child about their cancer and then also cancers that the friends they will make in the hospital have. It makes sure to tell the kids that getting cancer is NOT their fault. My only sadness was that brain and spinal cord tumors were all put under one little section (my daughter has an optic glioma brain tumor ). I understand this though as very few kids are diagnosed with brain/spinal tumors and there are many different types of these tumors with very few kids with each one. If you are reading this review chances are you already know this - but cancers in children do not feel rare at all once your child has it and you join this "club" no one really wants to be in.
Chapter 3 talks about the hospital. It talks about what to expect and how it is great to meet new people.
Chapter 4 talks about the different tests you may have to get. Not all kids will need all these tests, but it explains them all so the kids can either read the whole chapter or you can pick and choose the tests to talk about if you have an anxious child.
Chapter 5 talks about the different methods used to kill the cancer. It talks about IVs and all the types of central lines as well. Again, all children will not undergo all these treatments or need all the kinds of lines. You can let them read so they understand each type (if they are curious about what they see in their friends) or just focus on what happens to them.
Chapter 6 talks about the possible side effects of treatment and how to deal with them.
Chapter 7 talks about family and friends. It talks about how they might feel (there is an excellent section on siblings and even gives ideas on how to make the siblings feel better). it also gives tips on how to deal with parents, grandparents, other relatives, and friends both in and out of the hospital.
Chapter 8 talks about life after treatments are over.
In the back of the book is a hospital journal, a packing list for the hospital and a place to put pictures.
