The main problem is the unpleasant protagonist: Candice Boulanger is an attorney intent on clawing her way up the ladder of success, and achieving her goals at the cost of both ethics and friendship. In the midst of a heart attack she is whisked to a supernatural courtroom, where her relationship with her best friend is on trial.
Her motivation for ceasing to be friends with Milly is unrealistic; her self-centered angst over her bad choices and their consequences is unappealing. She blames Milly for the loss of her boyfriend, although her own poor taste in men was the main cause. She blames her for feeling bad that she can’t have a child. I can see a friendship cooling over these emotions; I can’t see seething hatred taking its place.
It is difficult to identify with either the perfect Milly or the unlikeable Candice, and the book is unnecessarily preachy.
The author has a bright future, as I enjoy her adventures into the supernatural aspect of life, and look forward to future books. I hope she will focus a bit more on plot and character motivations.
Milly and Candy were best friends since kindergarten. What drove them apart comes to light when Candy--now Candice Boulanger, a high-powered prosecutor--suffers a heart attack and finds herself in a courtroom of a different sort... one with eternal consequences. As Candy and Milly face each other across eternity, the truth about their friendship and the power of suffering and bearing one another's burdens comes to light in a story that is perfect for all ages.
