This is what I was looking for--a lesson guide for chess coaches. Something I can build on.
I have read many books that purport to show a parent how to teach chess; however, this is the only book I have come across that clearly explains each step of the game...and then some!
Munsterman takes the time to explain the game - from how to set up a board, the many different openings, middle game options and "weapons", the end game, checkmate ideas, and traps to avoid. The diagrams in this book are very well done and easy to follow.
This book goes into detail of what you can expect in a tournament for your child as well as tips for coaching. This book provides many many additional resources. His use of humor (especially chapter titles) is a joy to read!
On a side note, as the mom of two daughters and as an Aunt to six nieces - I was delighted when Munsterman clearly states that chess is perfect for girls. In addition, his use of male and female pronouns throughout the book was much appreciated. Typically, chess books refer to chess players as males.
This book is very highly recommended!!!
Well done Mr. Munsterman
