I truly did not expect any problems because of the reasons above .... But.. Was I wrong!
The fellow who had that simple install must've had all the planets in the right position because this was not easy.
First the install CD did not autorun , no biggie I looked at what it expected and ran that by double clicking on the program in the CD. It also looked like it was going to be a massive install so I change the path to the D: drive (actually is not that big an install) & stopped my antivirus the install started and bailed out with a "consult MSDN for further info" and had a link. Pretty much the link said "If you're installing a program the SYSTEM user doesn't have rights" but (I paraphrase) It can be a zillion things so don't bother us" Well SYSTEM had the rights so, MSDN didn't wanna hear about it
Therefore, Microsoft was not going to be of help. My system was now locked and need not only a cold boot but also a CMOS discharge (pull the plug off press power button count to 20) re plug.
Now I start getting methodical. Back to the CD the setup program right clicked on it on chose to troubleshoot compatibility. Windows 7 reported that yes, we had problems but it would set an environment for it. After some whirls, I was prompted to continue setup but then I got a KERNELL.DLL not found. I again had to reboot with a CMOS discharge.
This time I clicked the msi file, got an error, setup.exe got an error, but as the error screens appeared, I saw the installation screen loading behind them. I close all the error screens, got back to the install . This time I chose the default subdir on my C: drive, as per Microsoft system help (which popped up by itself so it knew I was loading a game) I opened up the games folder (nothing happened there but it didn't hurt) I refuse Directx 9 to be installed (the game insisted it should) clicked continue and voila. I had an full install --- slow compared to my 64bit games - so the XP environment it setup originally was being applied to the install and I assume the program itself when I use it. A GREAT feature that Microsoft has not sold properly. Technically, I have a virtual XP machine running the game).
The program asked for the CD key, I was ready with the upgrade (thanks to the other fellow who got it to work) a very quick run and I am shown the setup screen. And I am running with NO PROBLEMS. The demo really impressed me so the game left me stunned as to how cool it was. It is a shame Ubisoft seems to have given up on the program.
I don't know how many people would have the patience to spend 2 hours installing a game but being a techno person to me THAT was a game in itself.
BTW calling Ubisoft will not help and Microsoft tells you from the start to forget it. So if you're no the patient methodical person, this is not your typical Windows 7 install this is more like Windows 3.1 when I installed AMI. But if you put the time, the reward is HUGE.
Too bad, because with each new version, the program just kept getting more polished, and useful to average Joe players like myself. I guess I feel a bit guilty too, in that had I, like others, continued to buy the latest versions, Ubisoft may have made enough profit to keep it going (does Ubisoft even exist anymore?)
Anyway, I just got my copy (used) of CM10, and I think it blows the socks off 9. The interface is much cleaner and classier, and most important to me, the supporting training and study materials are better laid out - more approachable to people that want to delve deeper into the game. If you are a fan of Josh Waitzkin, there is a lot more material from him presented in CM10, including his own tutorial on learning the game from scratch.
Aesthetically, you have more chess sets to choose from - the 3D sets haven't aged the best when compared to chess games like Pure Chess or Chess Ultra on the PS4, but again, we are talking about a program that's over 10 years old.
Personally, when I am studying the game, I prefer the 2D sets anyway, and I've always loved the easy on-the-eyes "newspaper" 2D sets in Chessmaster, along with the ability to easily scale them up and down.
I've been able to get CM 9000 to run glitch free on my old Vista, Win7 and Win 8 systems, but oddly, while CM 10th edition installed fine on my Vista and win 7 systems - it seemed to lock up in the same place on CD #1 about 1/4 of the way into the install on my System 8.1 machines - the screen will read "Removing Applications," and I thought the CD drive froze. Finally, I tried again, and just left it alone for a long time, and it got past that screen and installed correctly. Still, from what I gather, it's pretty much a lost cause on Win 10 machines, which is a pity.
Anyway, this is a gem of a program, an totally worth snapping up if you can find it used and in good shape. And you still have some old functioning hardware laying about. Here's hoping that someone resurrects the title, and keeps improving the quality content. I promise I'll buy it. :)
I am not ignorant of the procedures of installing programs or making modifications on my computer, for I even removed my CD drive that came stock on Laptop and installed a 2nd Hard Drive on this computer...so I know what I'm doing somewhat. However, there is something with this program that is not installing on my computer and I am going to take my Laptop to Best Buy soon to try to get it installed.
However, I did have Chessmaster 10 Edition installed on a previous computer that I used to have that did run Windows 7 and/or Vista. It worked great on both of those two operating systems and I do think that you will enjoy this program if you like to play Chess. From my previous experience with this program, the game is very good and has good opponent selection so that you can build yourself in your own skill levels. Furthermore, it does have an online component where you can play online with people from all over the globe.
In closing, don't try to use this if you have Windows 8...you may run into problems and I am yet to see if they can be resolved. For if it is between me uninstalling Windows 8 for the sole purpose of installing Chessmaster 10 Edition, its not going to happen.
