Editorial Reviews
Review
"This meticulously researched compendium of the city's bridges over the Chicago River. . . . will please both scholars and amateur enthusiasts. Recommended."--Choice
"During the same years that architects invented the metal-framed skeleton skyscraper, engineers were working on a related problem: the design of the modern iron drawbridge. Patrick T. McBriarty's Chicago River Bridges gives these innovators their due recognition. Bridge enthusiasts and those who love the city will be fascinated by his careful attention to their design and history."--Journal of Illinois History
From the Author
A resident of the city for over 20 years, I never really thought much of the bridges, but since starting the project I can no longer look at a bridge the same way. The concept, practicality, and beauty of a bridge, and magic of the moveable bridges, to me, is now irresistible. Surely the engineer-want-to-be within me and the steel dust of Youngstown, Ohio were important factors, but there were easily a dozen influences that conspired and compelled me to research and write this book. Looking back it seems almost destiny, as this project has been a metaphorical bridge for my crossing of a void into a new life, and hopefully into a new career. Thankfully the University of Illinois Press also believed in the concept and created this magnificent book with its beautiful layout, hardback cover, and glittery red spine containing nearly 200 full-color images in this coffee-table book format.
It is hoped that most everyone will enjoy this book and relate to the beauty and my fascination for bridges, and in turn utilize this as a valuable reference and guide to the Chicago River's bridges for years to come.
About the Author
Patrick is currently working with illustrator Johanna Kim on the PTM Werks Series of children's picture books to answer the "hows" and "whys" kids ask about the way things work and most adults struggle to answer completely. The first book in the series Drawbridges Open and Close is scheduled for release in October 2014, published by CurlyQ Press and distributed by Applewood Books out of Boston. A second book Airplanes Take off and Land is also in the "werks" and expected to be released in early 2015 and third book Crosstown Trains Stop and Go will follow in the fall of 2015.

About the author

Patrick McBriarty is author of the PTM Werks Series of children's picture books designed to inspire future generations of builders, designers, pilots, architects, and engineers. A fun introduction to STEM/STEAM topics the series continues to expand with: Drawbridges Open and Close (Oct. 2014), Airplanes Take off and Land (April 2015), and City Railways Go Above and Below (Oct. 2016).
It wasn't until after earning a Masters in Economics that Patrick learned he should have studied engineering. The result (many years later) is the PTM Werks Series of children's books that he would have wanted as a child -- non-fiction concept books, filled with fanciful animal characters, blending Richard Scarry and David Macaulay to deliver fun, engaging, and informative stories to reveal how things work.
McBriarty's first book was the three-time, award-winning history Chicago River Bridges (Oct. 2013), which has been praised as entertaining, interesting, and accessible to most anyone interested in Chicago or Chicago history. It was the basis for the PBS documentary Chicago Drawbridges (April 2013), which he co-produced with filmmaker Stephen Hatch and was broadcast on Chicago and Milwaukee Public Television.
