Editorial Reviews

Review

"I can say unabashedly that I enjoyed every page, heading and picture of this book. Bovino clearly has an ability for perception that goes far beyond your average chicaspotter. This is what makes the work exceptional. If you look past the humor and playfulness of the content, you'll see that this guy has some seriously impressive analytical abilities. If I possessed these kinds of observational skills, I'm sure my blog would be ten times as helpful and entertaining. But this only comes through experience. Bovino's got about 20 years on me and what I can only assume is dozens if not hundreds of more women, so I hope to someday get on his level." - My Latin Life

"The benefit of being a skilled chicaspotter is that it sets you above other gringos. It shows that you have an understanding of different Latin cultures and Latin women. In fact, I'd argue that not being a skilled chicaspotter is simply ignorant!... Joe clearly did 'extensive research on this book--I am quite envious of that!... The profile for each Latina lady is quite thorough, and based on what I've experience, quite accurate...[The book] does a great job of what it set out to do. It's well put together in terms of artwork and data that it is well worth a read." - Seth Rose, Masculine Books

"Dear Amazon, please ban 'Chicaspotting: A Field Guide to Latinas of the United States." - Alicia Barron, Staff Writer, The Flama

"Objectifying, dehumanizing, prejudice, racist, stereotypical, degrading, hackneyed, bullshit, bigoted and misogynistic are actually the first 10 terms I think of [when considering this book]." - Raquel Reichard, Politics and Culture Editor, Latina Magazine

It’s hard not to get sucked into Twitter drama. From what I could deduce, some women were getting feisty over a book put out called Chicaspotting by Joe Bovino.

After checking out the Amazon page for the book, it was clear Joe was getting killed by dozens of negative reviews from SJW’s and feminists. Almost none of them are verified purchases, and it’s a wonder Amazon hasn’t removed them—although on the other hand some are asking for this book to be taken down entirely because it’s ‘offensive’.

This is just another example of censorship and male shaming.

Had these critics actually purchased the book for the mere $2.99 (the price when I originally purchased it), they would have seen on the first page a disclaimer saying that the book was done to be funny. It’s even listed in the ‘Humor’ category.

What is Chicaspotting?

Chicaspotting is a pretty self-explanatory activity—it’s spotting a chica, and then trying to deduce as much about her as you can just by her appearance. Some would claim this is racist, sexist, or other ‘ists’, though I’d have to disagree.

Chicaspotting is not actually not a challenging task as Bovine demonstrates. In fact, just prior to buying this book, I did some chicaspotting of my own...

I was able to figure this out as I had dated a Colombian girl before and this girl looked similar (that luscious dark black hair is always a giveaway). I picked Bogota as it was the most natural choice—it was almost like doing magic.

The benefit of being a skilled chicaspotter is that it sets you above other gringos. It shows that you have an understanding of different Latin cultures and Latin women.

Once again, Joe hits a home run with his satirical take on that wonderful creation: WOMEN. His focus on the Latina is light hearted and designed to be taken with a grain of salt in order to bring a bit of levity in today's uptight society. Joe is wonderfully NOT Politically Correct and makes no apologies for it. So, dust off those binoculars and go Chickspotting, Latina style.

The author tells you right up front what this book is about ... he delivers on his promise ... the author wrote this book with a specific reader in mind ... if you are not that reader ... keep looking for your next book (and do us all a favor, don't leave one of your 'rant' reviews here ... clearly you are not the author's audience).

This book is for men who will get a good laugh and see 'truth' hidden behind the humor -- and for women who can laugh at people's different perspectives.

I learned about Joe Bovino after reading first book, Field Guide to Chicks of the United States, which won a gold medal for humor at the 2013 Global eBook Awards. I had heard that he had recently launched this book so I grabbed a copy. After reading it through I came back to Amazon to see loads of people taking personal shots at Bovino for a satire book. He even starts the book by saying "Chicaspotting requires a sense of humor”. Seriously people need to get a life if they are spending all their time trying to tear down someone's comedic work. For me, I found it funny , but just like Bovino says in the book, "If you’re easily offended, this book isn't for you."

His final line the book speaks volumes what Bovino really believes:
“I hope it helps you find, identify, appreciate, and connect with more of America’s Latinas"

I'm sure you'll enjoy a good laugh or two if you you read this. Don't get upset if you spend your time or money downloading or buying the book, its your decision...you have a choice...just like Joe has the right to publish this book due to "freedom of speech".

I don't understand the criticism. It's a hilarious book, and the author has a great sense of humour. Actually, I found it very amusing to look through his eyes. I'm a woman, but I don't feel offended at all, because the book obviously is meant to be a comic book. That every woman is unique is true, but in the daily life most woman identify with some ideal. Media are full of those examples. So why not to laugh about it?

Very well written and with a hefty dose of humor. Love the user-friendly trait charts, promiscuity ratings, range maps, and detailed descriptions of distinctive physical characteristics, behavioral tendencies, chica magnets, mating habits, and more, this incredibly well-researched guide is all you need to successfully locate, identify, and date Latinas from 14 distinct American subcultures (or "species") Must I go on and on about the book. READ with your humor hat on.. Again great job Joe.

P.S. Rumor has it he is writing more books like: Grinospotting, ItaliSpotting and even MiddleSpotting (middle eastern) Have fun. Smile more

Great sense of humor. Like many other humors [punjabi's, blonde's, marwari's, irish....], none of them are meant to be targetted for that segment of population. It is just humor. If you can't take it in the right spirit, please move on.

THe definition of selfish is not wanting what you want, but wanting others to want the same thing. Joe Bovino tells you what it is about right up front and then he delivers it. If this book attracts you with the subject matter, you will probably enjoy it. I see haters reviewing this with venom. Haters are not good feedback for anything. Not going into what hatred really is, it just has no place in reviews. Any humor, is subjective. And Joe Bovino's humor is just that; his humor. Some like it, and some don't. I think he is entertaining, but a lot of it misses with me just because its not my humor. My point is it is a book that is a perspective of a man looking at a subject that he covers in an unusual but entertaining fashion. If that is why you pick it up, you will enjoy the book. The people who try to bury him to step higher (over his dead body) with their agenda are those I question. Reading both the book and some remarks, I wonder how "the white guy" is ok rhetoric and referencing his lack of rights and understanding of the subject matter. So easy today to flame on rather than offer a balanced and mature approach. The haters are right, burn books that you do not agree with or offend your viewpoint. Very American Ms McCarthy.
