The author (Janet Garmen) has a degree in animal science, is a retired feed store owner, and raised her family on their own family farm, so she writes from years of experience with chickens. She’s taught classes to help countless customers successfully get started with them, and has distilled her knowledge into one compact, fact-filled book.
It’s not an encyclopedia on chickens, but contains all the information to do exactly what the subtitle, Raising Your Own Chickens From Hatch To Egg Laying And Beyond, suggests. From caring for new chicks, to managing layers, and dealing with spent hens, it covers what new chicken-keepers need to know for success.
It covers how many chickens to start with, what breed, roosters, housing, illness, feeding, and the details that only an experienced chicken-keeper knows to cover. At 68 pages, it’s an easy read and it includes photographs on many of the subjects.
I was impressed at how much information is packed into this book, and think that it would make an excellent starter book for new chicken-keepers. It’ll be a welcome addition to any homesteader or chicken lovers library and a really thoughtful gift. I'm happy that it's in my library now!
Janet did send me a copy of her book to review, but my thoughts and opinions are my own.
Chickens from Scratch is completely essential to anyone thinking of bringing home some peeping baby chicks this season. From setting up a brooder to managing a laying flock, Janet covers everything you’d need to know to get started with backyard chickens.
This book is thorough without being overwhelming to the newbie chicken keeper. It’s a great companion to have by your side from day one. Janet Garman demystifies chicken keeping in this fun and easy to read book. I couldn’t put it down and finished the whole book in one day! If you’re new to chickens, make this the very first book you pick up, you won’t regret it!

A short, sweet and to the point guide to getting started with chickens. The best part about it, aside from good advice, is that it's not too long for the newbie - some chicken... Read morePublished 13 months ago by Homestead Lady
