This is one of the earliest albums from Chico's first Quintet. The line-up here is Chico is backing Buddy Collette on flute, clarinet, alto and tenor saxophones, Jim Hall on guitar, Carson Smith on bass and Fred Katz on cello.

The best way to get a feel for this album is to listen to the sound samples on this page. This music was far off the beaten path for a jazz quintet circa 1955. But the music also has withstood the test of time in my opinion because - as the sound samples convey - its musically mature and is based on solid arrangements and playing. There are no gimmicks.

One other thing you will probably notice even from the short sound samples is a difference between the first five tracks and the second five. That is mainly due to the first five being recorded live at a Long Beach, CA club called 'The Stollers' and the remaining tracks at Radio Recorders Studios in Los Angeles. In fact the live tracks were recorded first on August 4, 1955 and the remaining tracks nineteen days later on August 23. The album itself was issued as Pacific Jazz PJ 1209 and was the first Quintet's inaugural album.

If you are a Chico Hamilton fan this is an essential album. Actually, when you look at the line-up of musicians who went on the bigger fame like Collette, Hall and Katz this is an essential album for fans of any and all of them.
