Don't be tempted to use this 1:1 for coffee. A little of this goes a long way. I use less than a teaspoon to make a full cup of very dark strong brew. At first I felt this was quite expensive, until I realized I was wasting it.

Good Substitute for Coffee With Some Caveats

I have GERD and haven't had coffee for quite some time because even decaf versions contain some caffeine which can be a trigger for me. While I have never been a raving coffee enthusiast, I did enjoy a cup once in a while and I've missed that.

While searching for a caffeine free alternative, I came across this item. Having noticed the added benefit of fiber, I decided to give it a shot as that the price was comparable to a one pound package of coffee at a local grocery store.

When I opened the package, it had a slightly fruity scent which threw me off a bit. I wasn't sure how it would taste. After putting some in my cup and adding heated water, the scent became almost exactly like any other coffee I was used to.

Here's the thing you need to know before trying this product. It is extremely strong. If you like intensely strong coffee or your coffee black, you might be best to follow the serving recommendations on the package. However, if you are anything like myself, you're probably going to want to decrease that recommendation significantly. I tried it at 1/2 tablespoon instead of 1 tablespoon and it was still very potent even with a Stevia packet and creamer. For my next cup I'm going to tone it down even further.

I use this as an “instant” coffee replacement rather than boiling/steeping it. I use a Keurig for a 12 oz cup of hot water and float a tablespoon of granules in a mesh Keurig cup right in the hot water for several minutes. I can add cinnamon in the Keurig cup with the granules, or any other flavoring, but I also like the taste “black”.

Chicory Root Roasted Granules is awfully, terribly, horribly bitter. I prepared a single serving, according to the directions on the bag, and I took a small sip. The bitterness of this beverage was so extreme that it was off the normal scale of bitterness. It is far more bitter than the worst burned, too-strong coffee I have ever sipped and then needed to immediately spit out and rinse out my mouth. It is so bitter that I seriously doubt that anyone would choose to voluntarily consume it. Based on this experience, I do not recommend this product. I threw it away immediately. Now, I seriously wish I had sent it back to the manufacturer for testing. I would phone them but I threw away the bag. Be cautious about what you eat and drink. I request Amazon to forward this review to the manufacturer of this product. I am not kidding. Thank you.
