Connor is determined to enter a marriage alliance that will bring the most benefit to his clan as possible. Virtually invisible and overlooked, Ilysa loves Connor from afar while seeing that his household runs smoothly and using her gift of sight to warn him of dangers, but she dreads seeing him wed to another. I loved this story! This is definitely my favorite book of this series. Connor and Ilysa were great characters and I found them both very engaging from the beginning. Ilysa seems quiet and meek, but her determination and courage was awesome. The mystery surrounding Ilysa's birth and Lachlan's changing motivations were woven perfectly into the conflict with the MacLeods and Connor's uncle Hugh. Even though there were a few moments of doubt on either side, I liked how Connor and Ilysa could never really bring themselves to give up on each other entirely. My only regret is I would have liked Lachlan to have a happy ending of his own. Seeing as this is the last book of the series, I’ll have to content myself with the hint at the end that the women would see him well settled. Excellent series!

Trying to stay alive is a full time job for Connor, Chieftain of the MacDonalds of Sleat. He has more enemies than he can keep track of with spies surrounding him at every turn. The most cunning devil of all is the uncle who wants to take everything away at the cost of Connor's life, but he is not going down without a fight. Every day by his side is the biddable Ilysa who minds his keep and holds her own secrets close to her heart. Ilysa has spent her life dreaming of the love and man she can never have - Connor.

Connor looks not to make a love match but an alliance with an ability to join forces with him and create a peace in the land no one can seem to achieve. Yet Ilysa is changing right before Connor's eyes and the harder he looks the more she appears to be a temptation to his heart he cannot afford. Ilysa has the power to heal and the sight with which she watches out for friends and foe alike to keep Connor safe. Ilysa has not dared tell Connor of her love, as he cannot care for her let alone want her in his bed, or can he? Once the pretense of friendship is dropped and romance begins, heaven help them all.

There are so many factions trying to take Connor down that he is struggling to figure out when and where the next attack will come. What Connor does know is that a marriage or alliance will not work as long as the joy of love with Ilysa is a possibility. Keeping them both alive is priority one and after that the rest will fall from the sky as it may.

Margaret Mallory captures the love the land held so dear, combined with the romance of two people that want no more than to dream of the future. Ms. Mallory draws readers in, keeps them captivated with her story, and lets every person reading the book sigh over the beauty every discovered relationship brings. Lovely!

Conner and his mother, Catriona, are very close. He watches one night as she circles the fire chanting and cursing his father, Donald Gallach Chieftain of the MacDonalds, for betraying her. A friend, Anna, comes upon the scene and begs her to take the curse back. Catriona swears her husband will pay when she leaves him for another man. She leaves her children with Anna to look after them as the children always stay with the father, the Laird. She sneaks out one night never to return alive. One day a galley returns with her drowned body, Donald turns his wrath on his son and speaks for him to never be in his sight again. Conner and his sister Moira grow up with Anna's children Duncan and Ilysa.

1516 - 20 years later....

Conner is now Chieftain of the MacDonalds. His father and step brother are dead. Duncan has married Moira. Conner asks Duncan to stay at Dunscaith while he travels to Trotternish Castle to hold his lands firmly out of the hands of the MacLeods. Ilysa, who has the sight, goes with him to help run the household. The clan's future depends on Conner wedding the right lass and he plans on looking into several clans to find the best alliance. On the way out, they stop by the old seer, Tearlag. She tells him that his lass will pick him and to look to the fairies.

It seems nothing but treachery lies in wait for him at Trotternish Castle. Ilysa keeps seeing visions but can't understand them. Lachlan is sent in to gain the trust but kill Conner. She keeps seeing good in Lachlan but also sees a darkness that she begs him to let go of so the good can come through. Each day brings Lachlan closer to putting his allegiance with Conner and pulling back from what he was sent to do. Ilysa has been in love with Conner forever and he just can't seem to see past his nose.

“It takes a brave man to approach Duncan MacDonald’s sister, which can be the only explanation for why such a gem is yet unclaimed.” Chpt 17

Chieftain of the MacDonald Clan, Conner is everything a woman is looking. Well built, a natural born leader, and a strong will to protect his people, he must find his equal to stand beside him and defeat his enemies and his eye is longingly set upon Ilysa, a woman without powerful alliances, wealth, or anything to offer as much needed unity per say. Having had numerous attempts against his life by his Uncle Hugh who also desires to be Chieftain, Conner has some heavy decisions to make and quickly.

Ilysa is gifted in as many ways as she in beautiful, despite hiding it behind a cap and dreadful clothes, but a humbly proud woman albeit. After one of her visions leads to her locking up Conner in his own dungeon to prevent his death, she retreats back to Dunscaith Castle after his tempter gets the best, spending her time beautifying and primping in preparation for a life without the man she fancies, but how can she when her every thought returns to this godlike creature?

When Conner eventually catches up to Ilysa again he is bewildered at her transformation and wants her now more than ever. Now to just convince her she has more to offer then she thinks and to break it to his close friend, Iylsa’s older brother, he desires her and wants her by his side. Can Iylsa find it in herself to be what Connor needs? Can she prove she is the woman he needs by his side and make him see?

Mallory is a heart-stopping epistler whose writing draws the reader in quickly and begging for more.
