Purchased the set at the recommendation of Consumer's Reports. I had always used German Henkles or Wustof because of their superb crafstmanship, sturdy materials, well balanced knives and consistency of sharp edges. I also tried a couple of Shun Kershaw knives. All cost in the hundreds of dollars and perhaps are worth it. But when I needed an extra set for outdoor food preparation, I tried to be thrifty and glad I did!
Any kitchen should have a minimum of a Chef's knife, a utility knife, a paring knife and a slicer; to chop, dice and slice. This set has all that one needs. The knives are esthetically beautiful but unbalanced because of heavy handles; one needs to apply more pressure when using the "blade grip". They are razor sharp from the factory and maintain their edge for a long time if properly cared for. Always hand wash and dry after use (otherwise may develop spots on the blade), NEVER wash in dishwasher, this will dull the edge. Always replace in the protective wood block instead of tossing in a drawer.
This is a great buy of a very good set of knives at a very fair price, and almost a steal when purchased at Amazon.

This knife set is very nice -- very sharp and consists of the most-used knives in the kitchen. I have to say though, that I am returning the set to exchange for the Ginsu 7108 Chikara 8-Piece Stainless Steel Knife Set with Bamboo Block instead. The reason is that this "prep set" contains knives than are shorter than in the regular set. If you are truly looking specifically for "prep set" sized knives, then this is the set for you. But if you want the standard sized (8" chef knife) then select another Chikara set.

I really like this set. I don't need any more knives than the four that came with this set but I did replace the 5-inch utility knife with the serrated version. Had it been the serrated knife to begin with I would consider the set perfect. I just didn't see any reason for having the 5-inch utility knife when I could just use the chef's knife or paring knife whereas the serrated knife comes in handy with cutting bread (something I wouldn't use straight blade for). Another thing to note is that the chef's knife is shorter than a regular chef's knife since it's a prep set but I'm perfectly okay with that. I was concerned about the handle material being a low quality material or rattling or something but they all seem pretty sturdy and there's no rattling. The logo that is stamped on the knife block was already peeling/flaking off when I received the set but that's honestly not something I care about. The knives came sharper than I thought they would so I didn't need to do any sharpening before using them. All in all, I'm not too upset with the price since the set fits my needs pretty well and I think the knives are of decent quality.

The knives hold there edges and have a weight that let you have a tool in your hand in stead a piece of plastic. I would recommend the knife set to any one. We bought a second set and gave it to a family member as a gift.

Delivered on time and carefully packaged, no damage. These knives had a high rating in Consumer Reports, which took a position that said most knife sets were over-priced and too complex for most needs. As this set would be used on our RV I took a chance and bought them. So far, under light use, they are fine for our purposes. I had mental image of the 3am tv commercials from the 80's about "Ginsu Knife", but these exceed expectations.

Update: based upon favorable experience with this knife set, I ordered a 4-piece Ginsu steak knife set from Amazon. The reviews on the steak knives were largely favorable with the biggest complaint being the stainless steel blades developed rust stains within short time period. A careful reading of the less-positive reviews shows the buyers cleaned their knives in a dish washer. My wife and I have a set of Towle flat wear and some time ago noted rust spots on the "18/10 stainless" blades of the knives when washed in the dishwasher. When we began hand-washing the knives, the spotting stopped. I cannot tell you if the problem is impurities in the metal, chemicals in the dishwasher detergent or another factor. But I am betting if the Ginsu blades are washed by hand, there will be no rust spot problems.

My wife just pointed out that our original Towle set is stamped "made in Germany" while more recent pieces added (still Towle, same style, same 18/10 stainless designation) are stamped "made in China". Guess which pieces had the rust spots after a few runs thru the dishwasher? I'm just saying.....

These knives are the best value for the price around. The case is stylish and compact, so it fits perfectly in my small kitchen. The knives are well crafted, extremely sharp, and easy to handle. They are exactly what I was looking for, and I would recommend them to a friend in a heart beat.

I needed new kitchen knives, but wasn't sure how to get good quality without spending a fortune. I did some research and found a website that reviewed kitchen knives at various price points. This set got great reviews, so I decided to check it out on Amazon.

Originally I was looking at a larger set, but when I saw this set, I knew that it had everything I really needed for most jobs. I liked the fact that the block was fairly small and wouldn't take up much counter space, so I decided to try them out.

Many reviews talk about how sharp these knives are, and they are right! They slice through meat, fruit and vegetables with almost not effort at all. In addition, they have enough weight to them to give them a good feel in your hand. I was concerned that they were going to be too light and feel cheap, but that wasn't the case. I wouldn't call them heavy, but definitely heavy enough to have a quality feel.

You really do have to be careful with these knives because they are so heavy that they will sometimes surprise you!
I owned a few Henckels knives in the past and really liked the quality, but even with hand washing and care, the handles develop small cracks over time. I don't see myself ever spending the money on Henckels knives again. I couldn't be happier with this set of Ginsu Chakara knives. I didn't realize that Ginsu made high quality knives in addition to the sets you used to see on TV. I have owned these for less than 3 months, so I can't attest to their longevity, but I hope to have them for years to come. So far, I have followed the manufacturer's instructions--I wash each knife by hand quickly after each use and dry completely, and they still look great.

This small set of knives is so handy, and you can't beat the price or performance!
