By the time I realized that I wasn’t, it was too late.
This is the story of how we not only failed those we swore to protect, but how, in our darkest moments, when we fell into shadows that we couldn’t see, we had to be shown the light.
This is not a story to be repeated. I ask that you make certain it never is.

I was fascinated with the science, technology and advanced civilizations and alien lifeforms. The author has a phenomenal imagination. The characters were complex and well developed and I became invested in their futures almost immediately.
I don’t read a lot of science fiction because I find much of it to be overwhelmingly complex in description with no true story. This is not the case here. The author has given us the perfect blend of technology and dare I say, real human emotional input.
Even though this is so different from my own book, Julu, I loved the fact that hope and unconditional love played such a crucial role in this story. Not in a sappy way, but in a strong, powerful insight into humanity at it’s worst and at it’s best. Phenomenal story. I highly recommend this book.
The science fiction angle intrigued me. The plot and writing hooked me. I rarely write a review, but this debut novel by Dr. Alyse Steves is an excellent read. There was some repetition of information and a little info dump, but overall, it did not subtract from a good solid book. I initially gave this a four-star, but I’m bumping it up to five.
The world-building is fascinating, but it’s the emotions of the main character, Allyson (her human form) and Saira Ta’u (her alien form). Evoking emotions and getting the reader under the skin of the characters is difficult, and the author did a fantastic job. Emotions are what I must have when I read. The author's choice of POV was a surprise to me. The POV for Allyson/Saira Ta’u is in the first person, but there are a few chapters in the third person when focused on her brother, Dorain. This worked for me.
Yes, I’m a sucker for human/alien plots and space travel. There is enough of a hint in this review -I’m not giving away any spoilers.
BTW, a disclaimer. I purchased this book, and I’m also a new writer as well. My genre is lesbian romance, but I hope one day to rewrite/polish my Sci-Fi that has been filed away for fourteen years. Ugh...fourteen years.
Young, first time writers typically write no better than bad fanfic. I expected perhaps good fanfic because I know the author is highly intelligent, well educated and articulate.
My expectations were wrong. The writing is good, very good. Not so "polished" as to feel like the grammar police reviewed it, but flowing and easy to read. More importantly, nothing is given away. You have to read to know what is going on and you don't want to stop reading. It isn't a "read before you sleep" book.. you need to be wide awake and on top of what is going on. You care about the characters, the urgencies, the betrayals, those who stand up risking everything to do what is right.
I see other reviewers titling it as YA. I suggest that it is far more than YA, it is a book for all readers. I haven't been a YA in about 4 decades. This story is timeless, pieces of it can be found in our lives right now. So while SF fits, so does fantasy, political fantasy, dystopian... It can't be neatly described as one type or one audience.
While I read for entertainment, it also has to provoke feelings and thinking and leave am impression. This book does that. I look forward to more by Alyse Steves. Her ability to write such engaging stories should be shared for a very long time.
A couple of times, however, I felt like some of the chapters were repetitive. There were also several passages explaining past events that I found unnecessary, but I would say these passages would not put me off from reading the book. I would say, overall, that it's a solid work.
The themes of self-sacrifice and friendship are extremely well written. I could feel the emotion coming off from the pages and straight into my heart. Although there were greater lessons to learn in the end, the love the main character has for her friends and the love they reciprocate is the most moving and touching subject of the entire novel.
I see myself rereading this novel in the near future. I definitely would suggest this novel to everyone, not just for those into science fiction. There is a lot of mystery, suspense, and...HUMANITY in this novel, which makes it an amazing read. I look forward to reading more novels written by this author in the future.

The worldbuilding in this story was amazing and well thought out. I would love to read stories set in the other planets mentioned. There were times I did feel that the worldbuilding information was being presented as a info dump. Most of the time I was ok with it, because the information was interesting and I did want to learn more about the world, but there were times particularly at the end, where I felt these paragraphs slowed the action of the finale.
However, other than that I really enjoyed the story, the characters, the message, the action, the alien technology. It was all very well done and kept me turning the page.
