The Child Whisperer: The Ultimate Handbook for Raising Happy, Successful, Cooperative Children Kindle Edition
Maybe it's the tantrum at the store, or the hour-long bedtime battle, or the head-scratcher of getting your child to eat veggies. You wonder what on Earth to do, so you get advice, read books, watch videos, ask the internet. And still, something's missing.
You need a plan that addresses your child's needs, not everyone else's. Why couldn't children come with a handbook?
Turns out, children are born with a handbook. They ARE the handbook
In The Child Whisperer, bestselling author Carol Tuttle explains that children tell their parents every day exactly how they need to be parented. They tell their teachers exactly how they need to be taught. Children are trying to tell adults who they are so they can be recognized and treated in a way that honors them uniquely.
The Child Whisperer reveals that the key to raising happy, healthy, cooperative children lies in understanding and responding to a child's inner nature.
Children's true natures are written in the shape of their faces and expressed daily in their appearance, body language, tone of voice, and choice of words. Your child's unique laugh, cry, joys, worries, and even tantrums speak volumes about they type of parenting they need. And you'll learn exactly how to offer it by reading The Child Whisperer.
This simple but unique approach actually makes parenting more intuitive, fun, cooperative, and most importantly customized to your individual child.
The Child Whisperer will give you the tools to:
- Have a happier, more cooperative child, using less discipline
- Foster more confidence and natural success in your child
- Repair trouble parent/teen relationships
- Reconnect with your adult children
The Child Whisperer teaches how to read unsaid clues that children naturally give every day, and shows how parenting, teaching, coaching, and mentoring children can be an even more intuitive, cooperative experience than ever.

First, this book has TONS of examples of children's behaviors and interactions with them. There's also practical solutions that honor the very core nature of the child. (Hearing the part for T3's about not having to "do" anything for love and acceptance brought tears to my eyes. (I will be parenting my inner child a little kinder too!)
Second, When I read the section on T4, I just completely understood and LOVED my daughter even more. And, I apologized for the times I have been sarcastic, interrupted, singled-her-out, and shared her funny but embarrassing stories. She said, in such a true to T4 way, "Oh yeah, you had to read a book to GET me?" She made a stink-eye face, and we both laughed. I think this interaction while funny to us, was the start of an even BETTER relationship. Most of the T4 things about my child I had previously learned through trial and error, but I still wasn't really valuing those qualities within her. Now, I GET the WHYs behind the behaviors, and I LOVE them. This book also gives me ways to work WITH her nature to have a better relationship. She also GETS me and my T3 nature a little more. And she can let things "roll off" more too.
This is Carol's best book to date. I hope there will be a handbook for husbands next ;). I know the "It's Just My Nature" book was helpful, but the really specific stories of this current book, blows the others out of the water.
When I was a teacher, this book would have really been valuable to me to know my students nature individually. When I become a grandparent, you can BET I'll be using it! And, when my children have children, this will be something I give to them to help them be the kind of parent they would want to be. Now, I'll just be using it to improve the relationship with my children, and within myself. I am glad that I got the hard copy of the book as well as the ebook, because I will referencing this book frequently.
Just can't say enough good things about this book! (And if you buy it this week on Amazon, there's extras that you can get at the book's website.)
I had a hard time identifying my son's energy type. By the time I was done reading, no doubt I had a 1, 2, 3 (the husband), and a 4. Not all kids embrace their type. Mine love their types and flaunt it back to me. This book isn't about the dressing your truth course, yet all along my type 4 son preferred black Tee's and bold hair. My generation associates that with goth. He's not goth and he looks great. His intuition was right on and I could let him stick with his black (and purple hair) and know that is what is best for him without forcing more color. I also know he needs his quiet time (he loved when I read him the part about 4's needing electronics, Carol won his affection). I understand he will come to me when he needs me and I know he needs a different type of attention than the other boys.
My type 2 son gravitated to muted colors long before I knew what type 2 was. Again, demonstrating that children can follow their intuition when left to be. He was easiest to type based on his emotions and (slow) detailed, speed.
My type 1 wants to do everything his brothers do. It's not because he's the youngest; it's because he is a Type 1!!! On a recent kayak trip, everything was a game. You paddle, I paddle, now we both paddle together. Now we yodel, echo, climb off on to sandbars. This was so different than taking my type 2 son on a kayak trip... we talk philosophy and wildlife identification. This is where my type 1 flaunted his energy. " I am a "1" and you have to let me have fun!!"
All my boys are normal. I can honor them for who they are. The T2 is never going to be fast paced like his younger brother. I shouldn't expect the younger one to sit for hours like the older ones.
I tell you all this to tell you how this book really helped! I took my three boys to visit their three cousins for a few nights. My sister is a type 2 and her kids have mostly 4 in them. The six kids hadn't seen each other in a long time. Knowing all their types helped us help them get along. We knew who needed down time-- Everyone but my little one!! With intent we divided my little "1's" time between the rest of us to keep him stimulated and give him opportunities to do what everyone else was doing. It really worked out great.
Raising kids is hard. I am glad I have this insight to the different types of energy. The baby phase came easier to me than the teen/tween stage.
I had a barrier to get over with this book. It's the title. I am not keen on the "whisperer" theme. There is a book from an entirely different author on being a baby whisperer. My family is Cesar Milan fans (Dog Whisperer), but the baby book is not a book I recommend in my professional/medical/breastfeeding/attachment parenting world. Fortunately for MY readers and followers the child whisperer has NOTHING to do with the baby whisperer. I also use what I learn in this book to identify my patient's types and understand my practice (sneaky, huh?). I highly recommend this book to my practice (and when you figure out your type and your baby's, I want to know if my haunch was right!).
I would have liked the author to claim her own, Carol Tuttle's Ultimate Handbook for Raising Happy, Successful, and Co-operative Children. Yes! She could have pulled off her name in the title! She is that great!
