The universe that the author created is truly magical. The kingdom of Pelagiana itself is made up of people who are only part human. They have a connection to the human world, but there is disagreement about whether they should trust humans. They also value their relationships with animals greatly, and are even able to communicate telepathically with them. In addition, they have special skills, like a special type of fighting/sparring and the ability to move effortlessly through water (both with the right training, of course). The students at school study these things to excel at them, not only to get good grades but to compete for school competitions as well.
Of course, Jet makes some enemies while discovering what's threatening the monarchy and history of her kingdom. There are dangerous people and not everyone is who they seem to be. She also makes friends, like Charlie and Will, although with Will it may even be something more than friendship. There is a lot of great dialogue between Jet and her friends as she tries to determine who is a true friend and who is not.
Overall, this book just leaves me wanting so much more! It feels familiar to Harry Potter without being the same - the universe is different and I adore that the main character is a female. Jet is stubborn and wants to do things her way, but also has a kind heart and wants to take care of those around her. I want to find out what happens on her journey (and if she and Will ever get together, since I'm a sucker for romance). My only complaint is that some aspects of the Pelagiana kingdom are a little difficult to grasp - there is a lot of foreign terminology and at times it's hard to follow. But it didn't detract enough from the story to bring it down from five stars. I definitely recommend it!
The story was fun, with lively characters and a healthy dose of mythology and fantasy. the writing was great for its purpose which was to entertain the reader every page of the way in this appealing adventure. I've notice within the past few years a swell of strong female lead characters in pop culture through, literature, television, and film. Ms. Marvel, Captain Marvel, Super Girl, Bat Girl, all come to mind and all have their roots in graphic novels. Wonder Woman is the obvious example and has similarities to Jet's character. Both are at odds with their elders in regards to traditions and the status quo. Both struggle in order to fulfill their destiny while coming of age in their own time and way. Both are healthy role models that inspire people, young and old to stay true to principles, even when the world (or everyone at school) seems against you. All the super-heroine characters listed have their unique struggles and character arch to overcome challenges which makes them so easy to identify with. This can also be said about recent Disney characters such as Moana and Queen of Katwe. Children of Neptune is a wonderful serving of positive YA fiction that deserves to be read by a large audience!
Jet sets off to school trying to blend in as best as she can. Along the way she meets friends, enemies and an absolutely horrible teacher. While trying to balance school and a social life, her main purpose of attending was trying to find out what has happened to the animals. Slowly animals that are almost extinct, have been disappearing under strange circumstances. Since Jet has the ability to talk to animals, she relies on various animals in and around the school to help her solve the mystery. Without giving too much away, Jet is able to use her gift and find out exactly what is going on. I think that Children of Neptune could easily turn into a series whether it be following Jet, or some of the other characters we are introduced to. I would definitely read more from Makenna Snow.
